I know some of the great people swear to this machine.
But what do you think personally ASR is really good at?
Is it faster workflow, sounds better, is it good at samplin and chopping?
Is it great for drums?
Please post your own opinion,
thunx guys.

My reasons for loving the ASR is:

1. Everything all in one. Keys, basses, drums, sound efx, sampling, etc all in one unit
2. Effects processor. It's the classic Ensoniq DP4 processor
3. Sound Quality. Even with tons of sounds going through it, it sounds really really really nice
4. Flexibility. As in manipulation of sounds
5. NON-EASE of use. Yes, I meant that. The harder this unit is to use, the fewer that will want one, which makes it more rare. All i can say is, if you really master this board, you feel a true sense of accomplishment.

That's all I can think of for now.

Good because...

January 12 2007, 6:41 AM

1) Best keyboard mecanics ever, except for piano like keybs
2) Crystal clear sound. NO NOISE.
3) Stereo effected DIGITAL resampling for loop creation etc.
4) Effect processor and related bus concept
well ... that's it.

Not good / obsolete:
- Sequencer
- Audio track recording
- Sound editing capabilities w. or w/o PC

ALL IN ONE

To be honest, it's the only machine I've ever used... except drum machines. I learned how to make beats and sample on it and never tryed an MPC or anything else til just recently (made a beat on an MPC 1000 in a music store). I love the ASR-10 because it's ALL IN ONE... meaning you can do everything on it in one box. You can do the drums, samples, and with the keyboard built in you can play your basslines and keys on it all in one box instead of having to hook up a keyboard to an MPC etc. FX are built in (tho the reverbs aren't the greatest) and it's easy to edit samples, save shit, well it is to me cause I've been using the asr-10 since like 1994 (I've owned 2 of them: the original green lcd screen and now the newer purple screen). I think the drums on the MPC sound a little deeper and crisper (mainly snares), but at this point I don't feel like learning a new machine cause I'm happy with what I got.

January 14 2007, 3:26 AM

Finally I got permision from my friend to bring home his ASR,haha lucky me.
But man, its really hard to get the workflow on my mind.
Maybe cuz Im a software based guy.
I could sample from inputs, but i cannot chop.
I read the tutors from this forum, it doesnt work.
Can someone please, tell me whats the first things I have to understand with this machine??

But the sound is really great tho, you guys are right.

Well I have used a SP 1200 for years thats what I learned to make beats on. THen got a mpc 60/s950 set up. I love both of those machines but with them, you need a mixing board to really bring out the full potential of your beats. Now as for the asr 10 its plug in and go. The sound quality is unmached and the fact that it is a synth based instrument plus a sequnecer and a what ever other sounds you want to put into the machine that makes it amazing. I haven't quite figured out how to bounce down to records but what I can get out of it I am amazed by. The only problems I have is that it gets HOT when on for to long, sometimes freezes(maybe just mine) but other then that. With expanded memory this thing is truely for the creative muscian

@dopeness

if it's an ASR-10 Rack Modular (yes they get pretty hot)
very complex build and lots of packed Printplates (but it is normal behaving)

if it's an ASR-10 keyboard (no overheat at all) let it service

regards
Robin

I do

January 20 2007, 7:52 PM

I have a fan blasting it at the bottom on the oppisite side of the drive ( on the right side of the keyboard). It hasn't done it in a while but its gotten super duper cold out so I think it might have been just something to do with the board over heating.
