a couple questions about the ASR-10R: rackmount unit

Hey, so I was just wondering about the ASR-10R: rackmount unit. So basically
the standard accessories for this unit is, it should come with the manual,
maybe some sound disks, power cord, it already has the SCSI in the back,
along with the 8 outputs, 2 MB RAM (that can be expanded to 16 MB) and the
current operating system disk. Would you guys happen to know the latest operating, system version for the ASR-10R? (everything I said above varies on the seller, but this is just an example of the basics)

And for optional, is it possible (and will it work) to add the OEX-6sr Output Expander, SP-3, SCSI interface and the Digital I/O (S/PDIF format) on the ASR-10R?

sorry if I'm asking too much here, it's just when I do purchase my ASR-10R I
would like to take full advantage to the MAX of it, so if there's anything missing here, let me know.

also, is there a color screen choice for the ASR-10R? because I know you got
choices with the ASR-10 (61 key) with the purple and blue screen.

Thank you for your time

Why would you want to buy one in 2007, it will just make your life difficult?
It's much easier to do things in software. You don't need the digital i/o, and the newer models have the purple screen latest os is 1.5.

I'm fascinated with the hype surrounding these machines in the US just because a few key individuals (urban producers) grew up with them. Trust me if it was around back then they'd be using Reason. They go for half the price here is Aus and aren't that popular, one sold on ebay for $500 a couple of days ago - not surprisingly to a US buyer....

Mango, the latest OS isnt 1.5!! It's 3.53!! It may be alot easier to work with software, but so what? The ASR-10 is THE best sampler of all time, that is why it has the cult status today and always will have. Dude if you think your gonna come into an ASR forum and convert people to software, maybe you should find something better to do with your time. If its easier to pick up a man for sex than a woman, should we all become gay?

As far as the ASR-10 going for $500 on eBay, of course a U.S. bidder is gonna buy it because the best Hip Hop comes out of the U.S. and always has. There is a way bigger market, and the demand outweighs the supply most of the time.

Hungry, you cant add an OEX coz its already got 8 outs built in. Same with the SCSI. I wouldnt worry about digital I/O coz the D/A converters rip!

I couldn't have said it better myseld, but to put it a little nicer, these are vintage boards. I'm sure most of us on this forum have some form of recording software. So, for most producers, the ASR is a "must have", the same way an acoustic guitar is a "must have" for electric guitar players, an acoustic piano is for an electric piano player, etc.

Ha ha, I knew I'd catch heat for this...my bad about the os - I've been staring at my 3.53 OS disk all day, getting confused with my Triton Rack. Just saying it the way it is, not sure why people would do the hard yards & get a dinosaur like an ASR rack in the era of Battery, Stylus, Guru & Wavelab - Other than to be cool. I don't expect alot of support on an ASR forum but I'm sure most people would agree with me. Sorry if I offended anyone, we need some controversy to liven up this forum

I think your only choice for displays for the rack is the LED version (black background with digital characters). Don't feel too bad if you would like the flourescent display, cause those things fade if you leave it on for more than 4 hours. It's not permanent, but it looks like crap and will scare you (Like it did me).

As far as OEX, you won't be able to add an OEX-6 because there simply isn't a connection for it. The port for it is just not on the rackmount, especially since it uses a totally different connection than all the others on back of the unit.

I don't think there is an option for S/PIDF. I could be wrong, cause I have always wanted an optical out, but I've never been able to find one. Maybe Chickensys...?

as I was reading the specifications on the ASR-10R it says the Rack has 8 single bi-color and 2 dual LEDs (http://web.archive.org/web/19971009085400/www.ensoniq.com/html/asr-spec.htm), Doesn't matter to me, it's just I thought you had choices like you do with the ASR-10 (keyboard version) with the blue and purple screen. Okay so no need for a OEX-6sr Output Expander because it already has the 8 outputs installed, 3.53 is the latest O.S. How about the SP-3 SCSI Interface? or is the SP-3 SCSI Interface for the keyboard version only? you can check out the SP-3 SCSI Interface here: http://www.eprelectronics.com/SP-3-ASR-10a.htm

and Mango, it's all good, it's just funny that you come to an "ASR-10 Forum" and try to push people from not buying there product, but I understand what your trying to say but you have to understand, not everybody is you and apology accepted =)

Good to see this thread has copped some interest!! Mango, I wasnt trying to put you down man. I have NI Komplete 4, an MPC, and a Triton Extreme, and I must say my ASR doesnt get switched on to often here. But, I just give my props to the guys who use em full on. I use the ASR pretty much for vinyl sampling these days. Iam in Australia too.

Cheers.

Actually forget about my previous post, I just read that the SP-3 SCSI interface is a standard for the ASR-10R and ASR-88 keyboard (optional on the ASR-10 keyboard) http://web.archive.org/web/19971009065033/www.ensoniq.com/html/asr-desc.htm

another question, when buying an external SCSI floppy drive for the ASR-10R (let's say the Iomega Zip 100 SCSI floppy drive) should it come with the PCI card too (so you can install it in the ASR-10R)? or is it pretty much straight forward from connecting the SCSI cable in the Zip 100 to the SCSI port in of the ASR-10R (no installation required)?
