I see alot of people out there using the Ensoniq ASR-10 61-keys version but is there anybody out there using the ASR-10R: Rackmount unit version for there production?
it takes a little getting used to, since I currently have it sitting upright, i.e. horizontal, which makes it a little tough to see the display and buttons. Since I have both the rackmount and keyboard version, sometimes I'm stuck looking for some buttons, since they are laid out a little different. I just bought a newer and shorter slanted rack to help with viewing the display/buttons a lot easier, and I try to use both the keyboard and rack version equally to stay familiar with the button layouts. I use an old EPS keyboard as the midi controller, too.
All said, I like it a lot. Having the scsi and output expander built in and standard for the rackmount was a HUGE plus.
Awesome, thanks for the reply, so the ASR-10 Rack is a good choice? it comes standard with the SCSI and 8 outputs, is there a choice screen color for the rack version? because I know with the keyboard version you got choices with blue and purple
I have never seen an ASR rack with the flourescent display (blue/purple). My ASR rack has the old LED display (Black/blue). Every ASR rack I have ever seen has a Black/blue LED display. There are pros and cons to both:
the flourescent display will fade if you leave the asr keyboard version idle for more than 4 hours. however, the fade is not permanent, but I only let that happen once, cause it scared the shit out of me. So, I don't know what would happen if you let that shit happen repeatedly.
obviously, LEDs last forever (supposedly), however the LEDs have the old, dated "80's digital look", but the characters will probably burn on and on til oblivion. I have left my old EPS on for 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT, and the only thing I noticed was, "damn, this thing is kinda warm...wait a minute, I haven't used it in 3 months!" Take that for what it's worth.
Any other questions, check out my page www.infamousdjstorm.net. I have uncensored forums on there, and I just created a thread for the ASR. I am regularly on there, so holla.
yeah, the rackmount is a VERY good choice. The keyboard ASRs don't come with a scsi and output expander standard. THat's not a bad thing. ANY midi keyboard can be you midi controller (aka keyboard) for the ASR rack. Hell, I even had a friend that had one of those old keyboards with the built-in speakers and 100,000 programmed "rhythms" that he used as a keyboard for his ASR. and yes, his beats were hot. ha ha ha ha ha
