Hi, here is some advice about which operating system to use:-
One thing most people don't realise is that the latest version of the operating system v3.53 was optimised for using the AUDIOTRACKS recording system in the Asr10.
However, most people don't use AUDIOTRACKS hard disk recording in the ASR because these days it isn't worth it - computer hard disk multi tracking is cheap and powerful.
In fact most users don't even know that its there or how to use it anyway. Basically it allows you to record 2 tracks of audio to hard disk in real time to play alongside your sequences.
It's a nice idea, especially if the ASR is your only piece of kit but the downside with this feature and v3.53 is that it makes the asr MUCH SLOWER in use.
Even if you never use the function but you use os 3.53 the ASR is always prepairing itself in the background to do hard disk recording,and that extra coding slows the machine down, sometimes by at least 50%, during normal use.
Ensoniq always stated that if you are working on a project where you are not going to be using AUDIOTRACKS hard disk recording then use operating system 2.51 because it allows the machine to operate much faster and allows you to get more work done with less waiting around.
It is a piece of advice that most people are unaware of as Ensoniq slipped away some time ago now, so I thought I'd share it with you all so that you get the best operating expierience from your machine. It seems the best idea to run the latest os, but in reality most users are simply making there machines work hard in the background in anticipation of a feature they dont use.
So,why not take Ensoniqs advice, brought to you by me, from their grave, and use os2.51 for a quicker expierience and a lot less time staring at the 'processing please wait' screen!!
P.S For users with lcd displays, unfortunately you cannot use the earlier o.s and will not be able to increase your machines speed, but for owners of the earlier plasma display machines this is a great tip.
