Hi, i think you should change the start and the end of the loop of the instruments.

Same Problem

March 17 2008, 8:48 AM

Yes - I have exactly the same problem.

It's with every instrument loaded (even with FX bus on dry!).

It's only the left audio bus it seems, but it's pretty unusable while it's in this condition.

If it's been turned off for a while, it's ok to start with but then the problem kicks in and stays there.

I'm doing some research to find what the problem is (and possibly someone to repair here in Brisbane, Australia).

I'm not sure of my chances however, as the company's disolved and parts / repairers are hard to find!

Please let me know if you have found a solution.

SOLUTION!

April 1 2008, 1:08 AM

I've found the problem to be a faulty DAC on the analogue board.

Thesoniq have got one in the states (the whole board!) for $160USD + shipping. I've got the keyboard in with a specialist at the moment who's trying to source the faulty DAC (TDA1541A) but he' struggling as this has also gone out of production as well....

Will let you know the result.

Sorted!

OK - the upshot of my distorion woes are as follows.

I managed to find a ASR-10 Service Manual in PDF on-line. This listed the distortion problem as being 1 of 4 common problems the ASR inherits over time. Their solution is basically to replace the analogue board (easier done 10 years ago when they were still around!).

After an hour's labour with a music tech. repair place, they have diagnosed a faulty Digital to Analogue converter (TDA1541A - Phillips). As these Stereo DAC's are no longer made anymore we could not source ANY in Australia.

I was about to order a 2nd hand spare analogue board from the US (Thesoniq - $160US / E-bay also had a guy selling 2 x boards for $35US!!). Then had a brainwave of an idea that my OEX-6 output expander may have the very same DAC we needed.

Sure enough, I found it not only had one, BUT THREE of the very same TDA1541A DAC's that I needed!

My tech. shop is now busy with the soldering iron swapping out DAC's and I will have my ASR back today - good as the condition I bought her in 15 years ago

BAD NEWS :(

He replaced the 'suspect' DAC with a working one from the OEX-6 and the problem still remains.

He suggested it's now not an Analogue Board as we first thought, but possibly a corrupt signal that the main board is giving out.

Will advise next step.... (stuck for now!)

I don't know how you jumped to your conclusion that it's the analog board??
More likely to be the digital board based on your description, that's IF it IS a board problem at all.

Put on the back burner,

February 16 2009, 11:36 PM

I have not progressed any further with my distortion problem in the LH channel.

The reason it's in the too hard basket is due to my location (Brisbane, Australia). I would happily drop it into Thesoniq if were on the East Coast....in OZ!

But shipping a 40kg keybaord & flight case makes this highly impracticle. Also If I ordered a spare digital board from the US and found it's still doesn't fix the problem, then I've just wasted several hundred I could've bought a 2nd hand unit for that!

I'm now trying to source a seller in Australia now. At least I can swap the boards between the rackmount to the keyboard depending on what I find.

Rack use same boards?

February 19 2009, 12:05 AM

OK - after a quick search on Google I found someone selling a working ASR in 'excellent' condition. He also lives in Brisbane!

QUESTION: Can I use the boards out of the rackmount ASR to replace any 'suspect' boards on my ASR keyboard?

I may even use the ASR as a rack only (and leave my keyboard packed away). But I would like to swap boards so I can find out which is the faulty one causing the distortion.....
