In a moment of stupidity I sold my fj turbo stanza to a guy.
The engine had all the normal goodies.
forged pistons.20 thou overbore.
nitrided crank.
shotpeened rods.
all fully balanced.
custom head gasket.
ported head and heavy duty valve springs.
plus other stuff all adding up to 323hp a.t.w @15psi.(lowest boost it ran),on premium unleaded.
THE BIG TROUBLE IS:THE BLOCK HAS CRACKED ABOVE THE PASSENGER SIDE ENGINE MOUNT AND IS ABOUT 3 INCHES LONG.
THE MOTOR HAS ONLY DONE 12,000 K,S.AND HAS BEEN WELL AND TRUELY LOVED... TO DEATH AS IT SEEMS.
COOLANT LEAKS FROM THIS OBVIOUSLY, AND GIVES UNDUE STRESS TO ITS CURRENT OWNER.
I did a lot of research on the fj before undertaking the build up, but couldn't find anything that said they crack blocks..... I must mention that I have had three other fj's before this one and they never gave any trouble.
Any info would be appreciated .
CHEERS TO ALL OTHER FJ OWNERS.
STEVE.
BY THE WAY, AFTER THE SALE (AND LOSS OF MY FAVOURITE CAR) I'M GOING TO HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN TO PROVE TO MYSELF THAT THESE ARE INDEED THE BEST ENGINE NISSAN EVER PUT INTO PRODUCTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
THANKS AGAIN....

does the crack happen to end/start at a stud in the exhaust manifold. because i have noticed a weep of coolant on my FJ coming from what looks to the one of the lowere stud in the exhaust manifold. I have removed it and tried to use some Stag to seal it but know luck. I HOPE its not starting to crack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. But to let you know i have heard of it happening but i have never seen it happen or spoken to anyone who has had it happen to them.

Hey Paul.
The crack is definately in the block below the welsh plugs, but above the top engine mount hole tapped in the block. It's not near the head, but for curiousity what type of head gasket do you have.....I've found on some types they tend to weep coolant/oil under the exhaust side,if not assembled and sealed perfectly..?????
Yes it has happened to me too. I fixed this by cleaning all head stud threads with a good quality tap,it doesn't take much to get the wrong tension on the head bolts if the threads have crap in 'em . Sealing around the water jackets with a light smear of non hardening sealer helped too...I think?????.

Steve,I was going to offer you my FJ20 to drop in the 180B,you know, just to have it running,etc....Guess if you feel they're a bit unreliable, you won't want it. hahaha
That Sparco has found it's way onto the 'line....I'm still searching for cheap tyres though!!!! Not looking good
There's no Port boys that are into the mighty FJ20,so I guess that makes me even more special.hehehe....not!

It seems after many years of fiddling with fj's, the crack must be a "bad luck " story.
after a couple more fj build ups no such dramas.
