One from behind a RB20DET is better, a few minor mods to match all the bolt holes to engine, no great drama. Still the same type of box though, just a bit stronger in detail and a much better shift mechanism.

Take your FJ20 bellhousing to a machinist and get him to bore it to suit the larger countershaft bearing of the RB gearboxes , don't forget to use the RB box front bearing cover/first motion shaft support .

So is it the same length and does it have the same splines for the driveshaft? Are the crossmember mounting points the same?
Whats the bearing cover thing you mentioned?

May consider this if its real easy. The other option is z series boxes, they bolt straight up but are not as strong and most are probably shagged

To fit the RB20 box you'll need to redrill the top 2 bolt holes on the bellhouse and change the dowel also, pretty easy stuff if you have access to a drill press. The box is the same length as the FJ20 but the mounting for the rear x-member is something like 30mm further back so a minor adjustment is required when mounting x-member (I just drilled new holes in the body as it is still well on the mounting plate in my 1600)

Cheers

Did it fit into your 1600 without tunnel mods. Do you have an Auto or Manual tunnel.
