I got a Datsun 1600 with a fresh stock rebuilt Fj20det, with front mount, exhaust, 550cc injectors and a haltech e6k, now im after a new turbo and a mates selling the about turbo for a good price. Now i just wanna know what kinda power would this pull on a stock FJ? what would prower delievry be like with the bigger exhaust housing? any info would be tops! thanks ps, im willing to go new manifold and external gate ofcourse.

I am running a GT3540R with .63 exhaust, on a freshly built standard FJ, external gate, high mount etc still trying to get kms up, made 200rwkw whilst tuning, so thats not shootout mode, at 0.8bar, coming on boost around 3000, getting full bosst little before 4000, its a pretty good comprimise for the size of the turbo. I would imagine .83 would have more lag but not too badly
cheers

Do you want a fast car or a hp queen? GT30 is a big turbo and a GT25 can make good power and be faster since your power delivery is much better.
I have a GT30 with a 0.82 housing and the car is not responsive below 4krpm. It was much nicer with the old t3 but thats because of much engine configuration which will change to take advantage of the GT30 (lower compression, better valve springs, more cam overlap).
I have seen a GT30 on an fj making 350 rwhp which had the 0.63 hosuing. To tell you the truth it didnt seem any better than the 0.82. With such a light car, youd be better off with the 0.82 housing as it wont hit as hard when it comes on boost and wheel spin everywhere. Tho....mine does anyway...but thats due to huge camber and 195 lol!
I think a GT25 is a much better option for a street car. I just wanna make 400rwhp with slightly modified street fuel which the GT25 wont...pretty stupid cause a GT25 FJ on the street will probably faster than mine but I like BIG turbos!

Oh yeah I mean the GT2528 also known just as the GT28 when Im refering to the turbo above...

I don’t completely agree with you that a GT28RS would make a faster street car. It would make for an easier car to drive. But two equally matched FJ20ET powered cars, one with a GT28RS and the other with a GT30R. The car fitted with the GT30R will be faster on the street and the track.
Seb I have recently put A GT30R that is exactly the same as the turbo on your car, on a Mitsubishi Starion. It is making 10psi at 3700rpm. Plus you need to conceder that the FJ20ET will flow a lot more exhaust gases than the single cam 4G63 Starion engine.
The Starion has the same intercooler as you, I made 3” intercooler pipes, 3” dump and exhaust and 2” waste gate dump. The main difference between the two setups other than the engine is I made the exhaust manifold with smooth flowing very short 44mm id runners. The short runners help greatly with generating boost at lower rpm.
If more than 320whp is wanted out of an FJ20ET it is a wise choice to go for a .63 GT30R over any of the GT25 series turbos.
Seb when you get back I am more than happy to help you resolve the problems you have mentioned. E.g. Lack of power and excessive lag.
I think a large portion will be sorted out in the tuning.

Sorry to hijack this thread but Seb did you have two spare 13b turbo injectors?

My car makes 14psi at 3.8krpm. My car is doughy cause it has no ign timing. That said, I still beleive in a 1000kg car with an independant rear with possibility for no bigger than 225s will be faster with a GT2540 or GT28 than a GT30. My tuning is spot on. I wouldnt argue with Matt as he is a professional when it comes to this. My car is a fair bit heavier than the 1600 and plus I will run 285s and slot the rear end to reduce the camber I have so I will get traction with the GT30 (fingers crossed). I just dont think the 1600 will with a max of 225s. Im taking street legal tread here.
As for my plans I will purchase an FJ20ET. This will solve all the problems of power. Then I will fit 285s and modify the suspension. I will then build a manifold a new manifold based on Le Mans designs and retune.
Dont get me wrong, the GT30 is excellent for the FJ, but I still think that the GT2540 or GT28 is a better option for street fastness as these turbos can make close if not the 350hp and are more tractable in low rpm. If you can only make 350 on pump, why go more...i think most people think like this cause most cant afford race fuel. We will see a direct comparison in time to come as gareth gets a GT2540 and I retune using a turbo block.
But in a 1600, its very difficult to get traction and with a laggier turbo even more difficult.. dont you agree?
Hows it going anyway ricky? Hows jason?
Nice talking to ya.

I have fitted a few GT2540 with the .84 exhaust To SR20DET’s and they have proven to be more lagy than a GT30R with a .63 exhaust housing. I put this down to the GT30R and the GT2540’s compressor wheels being very close in physical size. The small turbine on the GT25 does not have the torque to get the big compressor wheel spinning.
I think a lot of SR guy’s use the GT2540’s because of the convenience of after market parts available for SR20’s. There is the option of going to the .64 exhaust with the GT2540 but you would be greatly sacrificing the horse power you are trying to gain.
It’s all about having the right combination. As you can tell I’m not a big fan of the GT2540.
Personally I would recommend Garrett GT turbos in this order.
*GT28R.
*GT28RS.
*GT2832.
*GT30R.
Obviously there are different housings available with all these turbos but that is why you approach a turbo specialist to get the turbo best suited to you.
I was not putting crap on Matt about your tune. Matt is one of the best tunes around and he is a great guy to top. But some times I think he tunes a little too conservative for me.
He will always tune a car to run the best it can run but not all ways for the most power.
I will have Matt tune my own car for general street duties.
Ps: All comments made By me concerning Turbos are based on my own personal experiences working with these turbos and diving the cars they are fitted on.

With all the variations mentioned add one more .
There is a newer Garrett GT BB turbo known as the GT3071R . The hot side uses the same 84 trim UHP GT30 turbine/housing combination as the Garrett GT30R . The compressor side uses a 56 trim GT35 (71.1mm) wheel in a .50 ARR compressor housing . The cold side is rated at 430-450 HP and being smaller (comp wheel major diameter) ie 71.1mm instead of 76.2mm (GT37 compressor in the GT30R)requires less turbine shaft torque to spin up "spool" .
For existing turbos there's one possible ace up your sleve to bring it on a little earlier . From memory those GT30R's use a .60ARR compressor housing , you could get the next size down .50ARR housing to accelerate the air from the compressor wheel . The compressor housing/wheel work like the turbine/housing in reverse - the smaller the ARR (Area Radius Ratio)of the comp housing the higher the velocity of the air coming out for a given wheel speed .
I've used a GT28RS on an FJ20ET with great results but if I had my time again it would be a GT3071R with the .63ARR GT30 turbine housing (for external gate). For those who don't want external HKS do a .68ARR integral gate T3 flange housing but its expensive . If I could not get the response I wanted from its .50ARR T04E comp housing T04B housings and back plates can be fitted .
I look at the GT3071R as a scaled up GT28RS with a T3 flange which ought to work well on an FJ20 with suitable support systems and good tuning - on the std exhaust manifolds .
Cheers .

Interesting comments. Ricky I agree totally with you that turbos should be matched accordingly to a particular setup. Take it to a turbo specialist if you cant read compressor maps and know your engine specs....
I wasnt aware the GT25 was that mismatched...all I know is that the straight gt25 is a good responsive turbo for around 200rwkW. BUt I have to admit seeing better results with GT30s than 2540....but that was for outright power... and I never went oin the cars or saw dyno curves so I had no indication of drivability.
Anyways all I know is that I am happy with my GT30R and I will take advantage of it when I come back. I cant wait. Ricky got an engine for me??
Disco potato, that turbo is a good option. But is it made by garrett or modified by a company to make them? I have been on the genuine garrett website and they do not stock this turbo....which scares me.
People on this forum must have the GT2540 and GT28(rs)...what do they go like.
Oh yeah, also, Im not knocking anyone or think that I have the right answers...Im just going from what I see which is, compared to many, very limited. But many heads make light work so lets combine!

Oh please tell bout 25/40, I have a what i would say a pretty uncommon setup in which I had a manifold made to suit a T25 flange, I guess this is in a good way since most SR turbos bolt onto mine. I going to keep it internally gated as my exhaust and dump pipe is all setup to bolt on a turbo. I am very interested in the GT25/40, can you please show me a power graph and tell me what its like to drive. Im making 240HP on Matts dyno now and thats at a T28s (S14) limit just about.

10psi to make 240rwhp is good power.
Someone must know someone running this turbo (2540)on a 2L with more boost....Im sure Ant will let us know when he gets to it!

Yeah, with my motor running 7.11:1 compression,I'm up for as much boost as my GT25 will shove down it. It'd want to put out WELL over 300HP at the wheels,or I'll be ****ing pissed! Time will tell.
PS-my website's a bit doughy,but I can't be botherd changing the old sections of it :P

can you guys tell me if this is a good turbo? my friends gonna sell me a garrett gt40 for 400 bucks. only thing is it has the HUGE exhaust compressor housing. The turbine AR is .95 or 1.15 , the compressor AR is .58. its a good monster turbo, but since im putting it on a 9.1:1 comp. fj20e, he thinks it will be too laggy(boost won't kick in till after 4 or 4.5k supposedly). should i change out the exhaust housing? or keep it as is? thanks for the info. if you guys want, i can get these turbo's for you at 375 each plus shipping(shipped from USA however).

I doubt they are ball bearing turbos as the GT40 has only recently been realest with the ball bearing centre and most trucks don’t use B/B turbos. The GT40 has been available for some time with the standard non B/B centre so probably what they are.
Still a very good turbo but a bit big for most FJ20’s. It would need to be a very high revving FJ20 to make use of the power this turbo would make. I wouldn’t expect to see usable power before 5000rpm on an internally standard FJ20ET.

Yeah I seriously doubt that they are a genuine BB GT40 as they werent offered by garret yet as ricky said:
This catalogue contains the genuine garrett products...less than you though hey! I cant access it at the moment but from what I remember it went GT30R then straight onto GT42R...hopefully you guys can take a look. Anyway, the GT40 non BB turbo is still an ex turbo...who gives a sit about 500revs...opps, I got a GT30R!

It does look like the genuine turbo....and for easily less than $800 once here, is an excellent bargain indeed, if it is genuine. Time will tell.

The GT3071R is a dinky die Garrett turbo or I should say cartridge . Its CHRA (center housing rotating assembly) part no is 700177-23 and a generic . That is to say Garrett sells them as a cartridge and the buyer options one of three available turbine housings (.63, .82, 1.06 ARR) and three types of compressor cover . Its in the older Garrett PDF catalogue or for the latest blurb do a search on "Turbo By Garrett" and download the catalogue . Don't believe the morons in Australia who say nah no such thing mate . Use the web to quote the part numbers or find a serious agent . I know GCG will order direct from the US when they want bits that Chippingnorton can't be bothered chasing up . Also some of the "budget priced" cartridges eg the seven bladed T04S DINOSAURS attract more proffit for the sharks . They buy them cheap but don't pass the discount on . There is NOTHING GT40R/GT30R about T04S compressors .
