We all know the intake ports on the FJ are huge so Has anyone ever "closed" the intake ports the head abit before to improve torque / hottom/midrange/throttle response?

like so;

Or even use a longer rod / strutted piston to improve the pin height and rod ratio. This all sounds like it would make it a more driveable engine, but is it really worth changing the FJ's characteristics?

i guess it depends what you're goals are..

anyway just thinking loudly. So post any comments if you have any..

Port sizes

Have you ever seen the size of the ports on an FJ24 head.(evo and std)
With the right cams and properly set up this engine pulls at any rev's in any gear, and will run in top right down to 1000 rev's.
I've driven all sorts of rally cars(2 wheel drive n/a) with different types of engine and this has to be the most tractable unit by far, even with massive ports.
So imo i think that carefull setting up with the right cam's you won't gain anything by de porting.

Yes, There's a guy I run with has done this to his head. He kills me out of 3rd gear corners, and doesnt seem to have lost anything up top...

Camshaft services in palmerston north did the work I believe..

FJ20 ports were made reasonably big for a reason , the large port holds a fair volume of air and fuel so when the valve opens its partly waiting .
Everyone has the idea that huge ports have huge flow WRONG . Go look at Cosworth BDA/BDG ports , they're not huge but the engines still went to 9 and beyond . FJ20's were designed with EFI in mind , the FJ24's were used with side draughr carburettion for FIA Grp B . In fact the works drivers knew the 240RS power curve was too peaky from over camming and low gas speed through huge ports . It says something that the standardish exhaust ports were not changed .
If you have real money put into good camshafts , thats what everyone used to do and it worked for them .

If you need better throttle response one throttle per cylinder helps if you don't have it .

I'd like to see a works type FJ24 with the 76 deg cams pull down to 1000 rpm .
Four throat EFI wouldn't pull it up that much particularly with the FJ24 head on it . If it is pulling from that low its under cammed for rally .

This port mod should give a slight low to mid-range torque increase. Have you flowed this on an airbench yet ? If it doesn't hurt airflow it's all good. Check it , as you may be actually losing out.
Cheers

Hey Chris
Yep, Tim with the 240.
Good to find you at last mate. I hear kelfords have done another head like yours recently, a guy up your way has got it.
How's that sunny of yours going? I almost sorted my evil handling problems, dropped into the 19's at manfield for one meeting then wore the donk out.

Drop us an email, tsillay@novell.com

Tim
