I've reversed an fj sump to fit in a datsun 1600. How do i now tell how much oil to put in? I know it must cover the pickup but i dont want to over fill it so it sloshes around. Can anyone help to explain as i dont have a stock sump to check with.
Thanks.
p.s. i have 'searched'...

Cant help you with the level. But I hope you put in baffles to stop loss in oil pressure as you break.....

yes its baffled way better than stock aswell as having boxed sides for extra capacity.
May have to find a stock sump to help see how much they fill it from factory...

Its easy if you have not fitted the sump yet.
Get a measuring jug from the kitchen. Set the sump up in the same alignment it would be in when fitted to the engine (ie. same slope left/right and front/back). Then measure the amount of water need to fill it until it is just up to the windage tray. When it is running the level will be below the windage tray (where it needs to be) because of all the oil up in the motor trying to find its way back so it will be OK. Once its all assembled, if you still have a dip stick, put the measured amount of oil in then dip it and find out on the stick where "FULL" is. You might need to adjust the volume either way by half a litre or so once you have all running, before you permanently mark the dip stick, but this method should get you pretty close.
cheers,
Paul

I'll try to attach a very basic drawing of it showing the rectangle shaped bowl at the bottom and the lid to the pickup bowl.
I assume that the top of the pink line would be the minimum oil level on the basis that the red area is needed to fill the bowl basically to the brim so it covers the pickup totally and the pink area is the oil that will be pumped around the engine when its running. How much oil though?...

OK. Looks a bit unusual that the windage tray is so far from level, but I guess you are stuck with it.
I would fill it to the bottom of the pink line. That puts most of the oil below the windage tray but also some above, when the engine is not running. It remains to be seen how much will live up in the engine while its running. It might be OK but be prepared to reduce the oil level a bit if it shows signs of being over full (e.g. gets oily/smokey in the breathers at start up)
How much oil ? Just use a kitchen measuring jug to measure how much water to fill it to the required level, then put that much oil in the engine when its all assmbled and ready for it first firing.
cheers,
Paul

thanks paul,
the drawing is pretty rough and not to scale at all.
The sump is actually more level than what the diagram displays when mounted in the car.
The dimensions are a bit out too.
I did some measuring and compared it to a friends std sump which was a little battered (as most are so i have found).
Both 'bowls' hold 2.5lt. Total capacity is around 8litres for std sump and 9litres for mine (both when sat level and filled to top of flange).
The std fj20 dipstick high mark is approx 40mm below the flange face and is around the same depth as the plate at the top of the bowl area. The low mark on the dipstick is approx 20mm below that.
I assume this means that when a std fj is filled to the high level on the dipstick from cold, it will be running with an oil level just below the top of the 'bowl' plate. This would make sense so no oil sloshes around the rest of the sump.
Hope im on the right track.
Regards,
Nick.

I got 8 litres when i sat the top of the sump (flange face that bolts to the block) level and filled it to the brim with water. And yes i do know thats got nothing to do with it... Just for comparison/reference.

Yes. You are on the right track.
Oil level should be just below the windage tray when its running.

I was thinking about doing this for my 1600 swap but havent because of there being no extra bung to drill a passage for the dip stick. What did you do about this?

You just drill the sump and then weld in a tube, same size as the stock dipstick tube into the sump and match the height of the new tube the same as the stock tube height.
Use the stock dipstick then and no dramas with oil levels.
