FJ20E --> FJ20ET swap in S12 Grand PrixAugust 5 2006 at 7:33 PM No score for this post | Kevin (no login) from IP address 84.29.228.146 |
| Hi,
My mate has a S12 Grand Prix (wide body) with the FJ20E engine in it.
We live in the Netherlands (Europe) and our first plan was to turbo the FJ20E-engine, because the FJ20ET was never sold in Europe.
Fortunately we found the FJ20ET-engine on a junkyard! The yunkyard ordered some engines in Japan and they got accidentally the FJ20ET.

Last tuesday we started with the engine-swap.
We get the FJ20E-engine and the gearbox out of the Grand Prix.
After that we swapped the starter, steering pump, injectorrail, etc etc.
We found out that the FJ20ET has a knock-sensor and the FJ20E hasn't.
Also the ignition is different, we swapped the FJ20E-ignition on the FJ20ET.
It seems that the injectors are all the same, a little bit strange because the NA FJ20 has 143hp and the ET has 190hp.
The ET has EGR and the E hasn't
We gave the ET a new clutch-disc and bolted the gearbox on the engine.

Wednesday we tried to start the engine with the ET-injectors, but all 4 were broken. So we plugged in the E-injectors. (just to start the engine).
We had some problems with the distributor and the timing, but after many many many hours we managed to start the engine!!
We also discovered that the turbo and downpipe FIT in the LHD drive car. I read several times on the internet that the turbo will hit the steering-rack, but it dont!
But we have lots of work to do, intercooler + piping and complete exhaust, so I think the fine-tuning and driving under boost will be about a few weeks....
But we're so happy the car finnaly started after 8 hours off searching what the problem was!

Hey, nice work and great to see people in europe doing work on the fj20 there. Just wondering, what have you done with the NA fj20? Is it in good condition? Cause if it is, youd be surprised as to how much power you could get from it, as much as the turbo engine if youre just using street fuel.

The FJ20E engine did about 200.000kilometres, so that's pretty much. But the condition of the engine is still pretty well I think.
Maybe we buy a second S12 with a FJ20E in it for spare parts. (also for body parts ect).
Yes, high powered NA FJ20 is also very nice! Last year I saw the Nissan 240RS in a classic rally! Very very nice sound produced that FJ24! |

Is it possible to use the SR20DET ECU to run the FJ20ET?
If I use all the SR20DET-sensors, like the throttleposition, knock-sensor, lambda, watertemp, injectors, etc etc. Has it tried or done before?

I have seen it done on a 4cyl L series engine in a Volvo but I wouldn’t recommend doing it. BIG WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.
Do it right the first time with a good quality fully programmable computer and you will never look back.

I know, but I have an extra SR20DET-ECU, wiring and sensors, so my question if it's worth trying or not?
Yes, I also know that fully programmable ECU's is the right way to do it, but they are above budget the next few years.... | |
