Im having problems with my MTX-8/ FJ20 setup.

The thing im having trouble with is the ignition timing.
Im running Direct Fire with 4 x bosch coil packs and using the original Distributor as the Crank Angle Sensor.

The car starts and runs but only on 2 or 3 cylinders. There is wet fuel coming out of the exhaust and when I removed the plugs to check them, cylinders 1 and 4 plugs have alot of carbon build up and cylinders 2 and 3 plugs are clean, as in not firing.

I checked all the plugs by earthing them on the head and they all have plenty of spark when cranking the engine over, so i think its just down to timing. Ive also checked the injectors and although they are second hand and a bit dirty, are all squirting fuel.

I have a handset, so can anyone tell me how to roughly set the idle timing?

Thanks in advance,

Blayne

Dude Id be saying you have the coils connected to the incorrect plugs.
Check your ECU connections first. There are 6 pins in that connector. 4 individual coil outputs, a coil/dizzy/tacho output and a ground.
Numbered from top left and then bottom left.
Coil 2, coil 3, dizzy/tach output
Coil 1, coil 4, ground

Check your wiring m8. I very much doubt that timing is your issue but, If you want to check/set the idle timing.

First, in S1 set your static timing here to +10 degrees
Next, enable the TIMING function in the S3 screen. It will read TIMING LOCK ON.
Run the car at idle and using a timing light, set the timing by rotating the dizzy to 10 Deg. BTDC
Disable the Timing Lock function in the ECU. Will show TIMING CHECK OFF
Scroll to T-rpm screens (i1) using the up and down buttons.
Find the IDLE screen using the left or right buttons and set that to +5.
This will give you 10 degrees in itial plus 5 degrees =15 degrees BTDC timing at idle.
Set your 1000rpm T-idle screen to +5 as well.

hey E,

with that pin order you posted above, is that the pin order on the ECU or harness side of the plug?

what view is that taken from?

i had a look on mine and, from the ECU view, the coil trigger wires are in the left 4 pins (2 in top and 2 in bottom rows) then the other two wires are on the right. eg:

coil coil output
coil coil earth

this correct?

cheers man

gday,

found problem, pretty embarrassing but anyway, lets just say that E was right.

I had cylinder 2 and 3 coils around the wrong way.
Car runs pretty damn good now.

Only problem is it doesnt want to rev above 2500rpm-2800rpm, really starts to cough and slutter a bit. Dyno tune should sort that though.

Cheers,
BLayne

Ah yes, we've all done that at one time or another.
If your going to drive your car to the dyno, just make sure you've get plenty of fuel dialed in, better to run rich than lean.

- Good Luck -
