Hey mate,
I know for a cheap option you can use an L20b alternator (what i have at the moment), think they are 60amp. RB30 alternator can be used aswell i think but ive never tryd that one before.

RB30 is no good to you, they run a flat belt pully and the the mount offset look all wrong for the FJ

I have heard of people using GA16 (pulsar) alternators on Datsun A series, A series and Lseries alternators have the same mounts, as do L and FJ.

Only thing you need to do is change the flat belt pulley to your existing V-belt pulley and space it out about 2mm using some washers...

when you used the rb25de one, did the fj pulley bolt straight onto it, or did you have to space it out to the correct offset to make the belt line up with the other pulleys?

I've used a RB30E alternator. 70amps. Just unbolted the ribbed belt pulley, then bolted the fj pulley straight on. Direct fit, no problems and charges/runs fine

When I did my 1600/FJ conversion I used an EA/B falcon alternator body with magna internals, 80amp and worked a treat. Just when u get the falcon alternator make sure it's a snafu one as it doesn't havta work and take it to your local auto sparky and get him to swap out the guts to your requirments.

Just converted to an n14 pulsar 70 amp today, swap pulleys to the v belt type and cut down the spacer to get the right pulley offset. Piece of cake

Did you need to use the N14 tension arm?

As i notice the tension bolt is further round than the FJ one. (on 80A SR20DET alternator anyway)

i used L24, bolted straight on just had to buy a shorter belt cause the pully diameter was slightly smaller

No I did not need the tensioner arm from the n14 - My fj one worked fine, but I'm not sure if my fj tensioner is actually from an fj. It is only held to the engine by one bolt so it can pivot up and down to suit any postion. But in saying that the n14 alternator mounts looked in the exact same position as the fj one. The n14 had a GA15de
