On main bearings 1 - 4, it isn't so much of an issue. There is a channel that runs around the bearing shell, so the oil isn't resticted significantly. On No. 5 though, there is no channel. The bearing hole needs to be in alignment for best oil delivery.

I use a needle file to elongate the hole. Just be patient. You can also use one of those Dremel-type grinders, but you need to be super-careful. Do not scratch the bearing surface, and make sure that there are no burrs whatsoever. Also, wash the bearing thoroughly afterwards. Try to not get any filings trapped in the lead coating.

Another thing worth noting is that there are a couple of different types of bearing shells - one has an oil groove in it; one doesn't. You want all of your (main) bearing shells to have this groove in it. It may mean purchasing 2 sets of bearings to get one set of bearings for your engine, but it is worth it.

I purchased ACL bearings for an L18, and had to buy 2 sets (the shells are mixed). I bought some Precision bearings, and they were all grooved. It just depends on the brand, I guess.
