| hi guys i think i cooked my fj20,
i had some overheating issues so i put on some ice thermofans,
then wilst driving the temp got up to 200 degrees farenhight it does almost get there in traffic so i was waiting for my new thermos to kick in, it then got up to 220 and i thought this is no good and drove the car for about 10klms to see if the temp would come down but it just sat at 220 my guage goes to 280 so i thought it would not be to bad, n e way got it home and the radiator is bone dry(steaming),no milky oil but and the motor runs fine i guess nothing notciceably different with the feel of the motor
what do you guys recon have i cooked the bottom end aswell or would you guess just head work is needed???,

Dude is this a serious question???
Change your thermostat
Ofcourse she'll overheat with no coolant see if you have any leaks, cracked hoses or take the radiator to get checked its a cheap way to find the prob than driving it around.
Lets hope after doing this all is well. |

if you had no water the temp guage would show o degrees as you need water to show any temp at all,
thats why people blow motors, they see the temp go up through the roof and as they see the temp drop they think the temp is really dropping but in fact the water is running out for what ever reason, so therefore the gauge is dropping
by the way did you check that the fans turned on BEFORE you charged off down the road or did you think 'I did the wiring,it must be right"
anyway if all is well you can check what temp should be by driving down a freeway a fan is only needed when your in traffic.
while i'm ranting
is there a space between the radiator and the front panel that the radiator is bolted to, thats a common mistake as the fans are working but just pump the hot engine air around the sides of the radiator and back into the radiator, in a circle, but not sucking fresh cold air from the front of the car through the radiator.
I'll now crawl back into my cave. |

did u put coolant back in the radiator? does it have any leaks in the whole cooling system?
when you wired the thermo fans did u check which way the fans work.. push/pull
it might be cooked ... but to make sure go another 45 min at 220 degrees farenheit

sorry for my bad explainations,
yeah my car generally runs in traffic at about 200 degrees farenhight
then tapers of to about 180 when hhwy driving so when it got to 220 pulled over and the thermos were on
so i knew radiator was hot but it wasnt off the scale so i thought nurse her home and she be ok
pretty sure iv done a head gasket.
not to worry just bought a rebuilt motor with wiesco forged pistons and all the rest for the cost of a head recon, so i shouldnt have these probs n e more,
cheers

yeah trev,
i have no space infront of the radiator really, cos my fj is in a 86 nissan navara ute ,iv had to take off the air con condenser off just to fit thermos, and it doesnt have a centerfugal fan once again because of space between the motor/radiator is so tight make it fit in the engine bay.
