Hello,
Driving down the freeway last night, oil pressure on stock gauge was maxed out. I have had the car for several years and never seen it go up to, or past the 6 on the gauge - it wanted to go through the roof when it would usually sit between the 3 and 6 on the gauge, sometimes a bit closer to the 6 but never this high. Can oil pressure be too high? if so, what causes it?
Anyone able to shed some expertise? much appreciated...
Sam
ps. here is a picture of a DR30 dash, my gauge is a little diff shape but same markings and numbers are same. Just imagine that needle going waaay past the 6 there. Is that bad??

check the wire that runs to the pressure switch. on my bluebird dash i have a similar gauge that goes to 6. if the wire is unplugged from the switch the gauge goes way above the high point and only stops cos it hits the top of the dash. Id say that would be the most likely cause.

Couldn't find any problems with my gauge (still haven't hooked up an external one though)
Changed to a different oil and flushed engine a bit, and the oil p. went back to normal for a good couple of weeks, even on the freeway.
Now it has started to go back up again. after a bit of curry, it skyrockets...
Any other suggestions, a mechanic mate of mine says it is possibly the oil pump, but no one wants to hear that, is there something else i can try?
Cheers

The first item I would suspect is the electrical sender for the gauge.
If the sender is going high resistance or even open circuit due to wear and tear, the gauge will be erratic and may even max out.
They aren't cheap to replace but I'm reasonably sure it will fix the problem.
My VL Commodore Oil pressure went crazy like you describe, new sender fixed it [$80].
Alternatively, fit a mechanical gauge, at least temporarily to check the real engine oil pressure.
Electrical oil pressure senders are prone to this sort of malfunction.

$80 sounds good.

Thanks mate,
Got a mechanical gauge organised for this weekend.
If it is said 'sender', anyone know where i can get me one as i would love to keep my factory gauge.
Thanks for the replies, fellas.

Try Nissan Spare Parts.
It is highly likely that the sender from an SR, CA or RB series would be OK.
Keep the old one, it may have a part number on it somewhere.
