The valve clearances in the FJ20 engine is achieved by installing different thickness valve caps on top of the valve, underneath the cam lobe.
It is a time consuming, painful, expensive and boring exercise, not normally attempted by the home mechanic on a Sunday arvo.
I also believe that the caps required to set the clearances are by no means cheap and you need a variety of them on hand to set up the clearance as per the Nissan FSM.
There are 21 different thickness valve caps listed in the Manual!
Having said that, the engine is normally set up in the factory with the correct clearances and unless/until something changes dramatically, the caps fitted to each valve should be OK for the duration.
I did a valve grind on my engine years ago as part of a complete rebuild and just replaced the caps from whence they came.
The clearance was still within spec. so that as they say was that.
If there is any valve noise, I can't hear it!!
Do you have a noise issue or is someone fishing for your dollars??
