Guys,

What do you use and where do you get the red wrinkle paint for the FJ rocker covers & inlet manifolds?

I'm guessing the prep work is degrease and light rub back?

Ben

I can tell you that it's NOT VHT Wrinkle Finsh!!! sad.gif
Horrible dirty red, nothing like the factory colour at all. Unless I just got a bad tin...it looked like it'd been sitting for quite a while........

With prep i just rubbed best i could with 800 grit then scotch brited the rest with thinners. Painted mine in straight red tinter (PPG), rubbed back the raised bits with writing engraved in them then painted heaps of PPG clear over the top. Looks sweet and easy to clean.
mmm Shiny.

Ive used the vht paint with good results. The key to a good end product is always good prep work, but the other thing that helps with the vht paint is to warm the item thats to be painted, get a good looking gloss coat, usually takes about 5 coats, let tac off between each coat. then let sit for a least a week as the paint is still very soft. hope this helps

my best results with rocker covers is to sandblast the cover as prep, gets rid of every bit of grease and dirt and old paint, of course you have to pull all of the cover completely apart to clean the shot out of it afterwards, breathers the lot. VHT high temp gets my vote, nice bright, matt red, but its soft and gets dirty very easily.

Dragging up an old thread. Came across some factory fj20 pics and want to paint my inlet manifold in the red wrinkle paint.

Few quick searches came up with this link ->http://www.speco.com.au/vht_special.html

Anyone tried or used this stuff before? Or does anyone else have any recommendations for wrinkle finish other than powder coating?

cheers

VHT 'Red' (#SP204) looks the goods.
Remember to read the label/instructions thoroughly. If it requires primer, get what it recommends!

Let us know what it turns out like if you do it.
