Wild guess is that you have a heater hose or something misrouted (removed?) so that the thermostat is effectively bypassed.

Also, double check to see that your temp gauge is accurate.

or a stuck open thermostat(its happened to me before...)
just replace the t-stat with an aproprate replacement and check to make sure your hoses arent routed wrong as said above

ECU temp would be reading correct (aftermarket puter), and I've also put an aftermarket gauge on that reads the same. As I said above,I've been through several thermostats, with little to no change in the results sad.gif

I looked online and a similar problem in a Toyota engine was traced to a missing o-ring that is required along with a paper gasket. I do not know if there is an o-ring in the FJ20 setup. Are the thermostats you are using of the same design as oem?

Yes the thermostats are the same design as OEM.The last one I put in there was listed for a DR30!
Not too sure about an o-ring? They don't run one as far as I am aware.Does anyone else here know?
I've just got my housing silastic'd on,but I can't see how not using a gasket would cause the problems that I'm encountering....

where are you getting that reading??? stock temp gauge?

IMO, try getting a good mechanical temp gauge installed somewhere before the T stat if possiable, and get a reliable reading from that

Are you running a massive unregulated oil cooler?

Another wild guess: Your head gasket has a leak or the block is cracked. The boost/combustion-pressure is pressurizing the coolant and forcing the t-stat open.

Check your coolant with one of the kits that detects combustion gases.

I do run an oil cooler, but it's got a thermostat in the line.Wouldn't be that,as oil temp is right once it gets up to operating temp.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't tell me that!!! Block cracked!!! wouldn't be head gasket as I've recently repalced it! Had a sleve put in number 2 pot!! sad.gif

Did you have the temp issue before you had the sleeve installed or maybe the head gasket?

In any case, it is simple to check the coolant with the kit.

I was thinking about it some more -- normally a leak of combustion gases will cause the engine to overheat. Maybe not in an early stage.

It might be that the boost pressure is leaking through part of the intake tract in the head and reaching a coolant passage. Was any porting done to the head? Either way it seems like you would have lots of bubbles in the coolant venting so that a steady pressure would be put on the t-stat.

I guess a big question is whether the engine has always done this or it showed up after some procedure was done (like the sleeve?)?

And you're sure the hoses are not mis-routed?

I am assuming that if a person is writing-in concerned about the running temperature of his engine; has purchased multiple thermostats and checked the temperature with several different devices then he is not running a 70 degree Celcius thermostat. Pretty fair assumption.

Hi guys - bit of an update. After a fair while carefully scrutinizing all hoses etc,I've found that the header tank actually by-passes the thermostat! And its hooked up according to the box!
Will have pics soon

Top silicon hose - overflow
Top rubber hose - to old overflow in the raidaitor
Next blue hose - T'd into turbo cooling line
And there's a hose pointing down that goes to the bottom raidaitor hose

Umm.........why do you see the need to fit that funky pressurised header bottle for M8?

Seems to me not much more than added complexity along with added possible (pressurised) failure points that simply dont need to be there at all.

Try pissing it off and running the tried and tested system that is cheap, effective and that rarely EVER fails.
A basic recovery tank with an appropriate radiator cap!
By all means use that funky blingy bottle thingy but just hook it to the radiator overflow hosetail and run a depressurised cap on the bottle.

Umm.........cause of the hotspot and subsequent overheating M8!

The bling thing IS hooked to the radiator with a depressurised cap? If I'm not getting what you're saying, then please correct me!

You forgot to mention you had an aftermarket overflow tank with an extra t-piece into the turbo cooling line in the first post you made. Where did you buy that?
This is NOT plumbed up like a factory DR30 at all.
Someone actually gave you the right answer in the second reply too. Its staring you right in the face! LOL!
What a tool...

I bought it from Just Jap,thanks for asking happy.gif
I never said my motor was plumbed up like a DR30!!!
And as for the second post..."RUN MORE BOOST (fiddy) with 7.1 :1 comp. He he he.????????"
I tried that, but now all I've got is bubbles in that new header tank!!! Is this bad?
:P

Your all a bunch of wankers. Give the guy a break. he gets on here trying to get help from a group that is SUPPOSEDLY about nuturing the fj20 experience. And all most of you wankers do is bag him out for not knowing whats wrong. Each to their own, he can run what and how he likes his car. Now im gonna join in and post gutlessly, oh sorry i mean annonymously slagging off people i know nothing about. U wankers, u all suck cause ur car isnt blue with a t28 and standard injectors with a big sticker on the side and you all dont hang out at Mcdonalds on a friday and sturday night. ****, now i dont have time to crap on about how **** hot my own car is and not post fotos or anything to prove it. My car has 672hp at the wheels and its all standard, with a standard computer and a blown head gasket and a busted turbo. I dynoed it myself on my driveway with a couple of beer bottles we layed down. I hooked up my nephews learning centre computer to it and it taught me how to spell cow. U bunch of wankers.
