Kameari is having a clearance on their "race" flywheels for the FJ20 NA. They are LIGHT, 3.7 kg. I currently have the larger turbo flywheel in my car right now which has got to be 12kg. My motor is a 10.5:1 carbed with stock internals, would this flywheel suck all of the torque out of it and make it no fun for the street?

Oh dear........... No m8, the big fly wont "suck it" torque out of it and make it no fun for the street. Not that you will even notice anyway.
In fact quite the opposite is more true.
Really light flywheels are a pain in the arse on the street, particularly if in addition to a lively clutch.

By all means have your flywheel lightened somewhat but going from stock down to 3 and 1/2 odd kilos....eeeyew. You'd learn to hate a decision like that virtually the first time you go to reverse out of a parking space on a bit of a hill!!!

Thanks, that's what I was concerned with. I brought up the torque issue as it was stated on the Kameari site.

See, in the rareified race atmosphere the likes of Ben D and some others inhabit, the weight of the flywheel, along with its structural integrity becomes a real big issue.
But your talking zillions of RPM and 6...7...8 whoknows hundred horsepower.

For the vast majority, Ie, the rest of us, having a flywheel that light on a streetcar is much more about bragging rights than any real world benefit.

If you intend to keep your engine revs around stock then its acceptable to remove some weight from the stock flywheel but if your intending to rev it right up a lot then a decent steel flywheel is certainly in order.

The temptation is always to go as light as possible based on the promise of releasing all thos "sucked up" torque number that are magically hidden away in the flywheels excess kilos, never to be seen again but in the real world, or so the promos claim, this just isnt the case.

Probably the most immediate result you will see is the engine is a lot "brighter" when being revved in neutral. So what?!

In days gone by, Ive run everything from stock to what eventually looked like a dinner plate as a flywheel and all I found was the magnitude of the PITA factor increased as the flywheels weight decreased!!!

Good luck M8.

having also run lightened (cast iron) only to have them explode, and, steel lightened( that just dont explode), and seen what happens to really light alloy with steel face for clutch, ( they bend like a soup bowl)
I now run a steel machined from a billet of Bohler Udderholm 4140 at approx 7kg's, (I still want torque/pull out of the corners).
In a 1070 kg Datsun 260Z fuel injected L28 in Prod Sports/Historics, I found at MtPanorama, every corner exit, even down Conrod/Caltex chase, Murrays and Hell corner were all UPHILL exits, and you need pull, othyerwise youur engine struggles, and you start looking for gears and go bacwards real quick.
Fastest lap time? 2.46 Yep I'm happy.

Kameari stuff is excellent, I use a lot of it inthe old Dato's, but at 3.5kgs for a fly?, I'd say no.
One of the Zed club guys has put one in a race 240z, and dont like it, sure4 very resposive on unloaded throttle, but he has to rev the tits off the thing to keep it stroking along
