I have a timing chain noise at 2300rpm (intermittently ie one day its there and the next day its gone) If you rev it past 4k rpm noise dissapears. Its a horrible sound and when it happens i try n keep the revs below 2300rpm
The noise sounds like the timing chain is slapping the long chain guide on the
exhaust side.
Is the long chain guide adjustable?
Recently i have replaced the long chain guide as it cracked and was hanging
on by a few threads on the top bolt.
I have replaced the timing chain 4 years ago (approx 15K ago)
I have replaced the tensioner this week. It has the SWR cap so it takes
up more of the chain slack.
**The start up rattle goes away once i get oil pressure. This is not the
rattle im concerned about.
I run 20/50 oil. Once i get oil pressure it sits on 60 psi at idle till it warms up then its 45-50 psi. When driving it goes up to 80psi at higher revs.
Has anyone else had this?
Is it possible to be to weak or strong valve springs?
Cheers
Peter

try the hydraulic-mechanical tensioner sourced from a mazda, search the forum you should be able to find something on this if not i can find the part number for the tensioner on our fj,you think the noise is bad we had a 350,000 k motor still running mint that made a god awful rattle the whole time so dont stress. |

Check that the sump is not bashed in, if it is the lack of oil suction will cause cavitations in the oil pump and it will will give the same noise. |

Thanks guys but it isn't the tensioner. I have tried both new original and modified fj tensioners and the mazda ratcheting tensioner to no avail.
Craig
Had a look and the sump isn't bashed in or damaged.
I think i will have to pull the rocker cover off and run
the engine till it makes the noise and physically see whats going
on.
Cheers
