Response to Ball-striking

The three biggest things I thing we need to look at are:

1) body position relative to the ball: get the kid to the side of the ball. This sets up the body for the big muscles to swing. If you don't get the kid in the right position, the next two things happen a lot to compensate.
2) plant foot position: if the plant foot is too far behind, the mechanics for power and accuracy are instantly trashed. The direction of the plant foot is also important. It should be pointing at the target. A lot of hooked balls occur because the plant foot is pointed left of target, which causes an overturn of the hips.
3) big muscle use: a lot of kids swing at the ball from the knee down (no power, pain in knee, etc.). We have to get them to feel the kicking motion as more of a easy, fast hip turn and upper leg swing.

As for how to organize the process, I could some advice. The only things I'm sure about is to give the kids a lot of reps with close instruction so they don't program the bad habits mentioned above. I think if they get the feel right and ingrained, then you've won the battle.
