Dribbling and ball striking (passing)are the foundation skills. Along with small sided play, this is a great (the best in my view) basis for any coach teaching youngsters. The degree of ball mastery dictates everything else that can be done on offense (your mastery) and defense (their mastery).
As a youth coach, I constantly have to remind myself not to get ahead of my kid's development. Gaining ball mastery is a long, gradual process. That process requires continued technical training (with variety), chances to fail without emotional or playing related set backs, and gentle quidance to help the youngster learn to apply the skills.
