Response to What makes a good referee

and we need to understand they have a thankless job. They are like basketball refs, they are always right and yet wrong on every call they make. It is almost impossible for them to make both teams happy.

We are lucky to have any refs considering the abuse they go through from the fans, coaches, and players.

That having been said, the following is what I would like from a ref:
1) Consistency and fairness in calls. Hopefully the calls can even out by the end of the game. You will never be perfect in your calls and we should not expect that. Too many variables going on at one time for you to see everything.
2) Control of aggressive play that can lead to injuries. Cards for clipping, holding, elbows, tackles from behind, etc. Let the coaches and players know before the game starts that you will not tolerate any dirty play and will call fouls for overly aggressive play. Talk with the coaches together at half-time if you feel the play has become too aggressive.
3) Allowing input from the coaches and a discussion with the coaches before the game starts. What do you expect and what will you be calling close.
4) Proper position on the field to call offsides. So many refs are not in position to see the initial kick and the position of the forward player at time of the kick. It would be nice to rely on line refs but many times they are parents or other non certified refs. IF they are cretified refs, then defer to their call on offsides.

Do NOT stand at mid field and call offsides at the 18 yard line. That is facetious.
5) Let everyone at the game know you are in control but also wear a smile while doing it. Tough but cordial.
