Effective weight training should involve cycles. If you choose to lift heavy, stick with only a couple exercises for major body parts. Don't do the same routine for more than 2-3 months max. If nothing else, you body will adapt to your routine and your gains will diminish.
I think overtraining is always a risk with heavy lifting, regardless of your age & health. Recovery is as important to muscle growth as is exhaustion, so take a couple days off the weights at least once a month.
If you can get some guidance locally, do so. Some lifting techniques can also work on explosive power, and plyo can be incorporated early on in your strength program if not overdone.
