against some teams it can be effective to compact the middel of the field and fill it with bodies, even if those bodies are players from the other team. It can create lots of traffic that can be difficult to break down. Also it lessens the numbers of crosses you may face.
Basically, if your opponent has the ball 40 yards from goal with loads of bodies behind the ball, it will be a difficult route to score.
