I don't want to sound like the bad guy, but certain injuries can be played on and players at a certain level are expected to play through a small amount of discomfort. If the trainer recomends theorpy, then get it. But if the injury takes two months to heal, and no further damage will be done by playing on it, then it may be worth it to suck it up and finish the season. Let the sucker heal in December and January.
If you are really scared or it really hurts a lot, see a doctor. But be aware that regardless of what it is, you can always find a doctor to say rest it because they want to cover their own tales. You'd be well advised to see a doctor who specializes in sports medicine.
I also want to clarify, if the trainer says rest... then rest.
