Its my understanding that the team awarded the free kick does not have to ask for 10 yards. This has happened to my son in past years. Nothing bugs him more then when a defending player stands within a few feet of the ball and pretends not to know they are to close. RRRIGHT Meanwhile his team gets to set up to defend. I've seen him do this at least 4 times in a season. He puts the ball down gets the okay from the ref. and if that defender happens to be in the way and gets hit by the ball out comes the yellow card and the player gets sent off the field. Not sure if this is in most spectators view of "in the spirit of the game", but usually that same player will not stand in front of another free kick during the game.
