At the high school level, your selection as Captain should have risen out of the respect and trust that your teammates and coaches have for you as a player and leader. If you were simply appointed by the coach, I would insist on a team vote. I would not worry about your legacy. If you have team motivational or bonding problems, you can only lead by example. If you have team cliques or factionalism, don't take sides. You should be honest, fearless, and pursue virtue at all times. It is better to be respected than loved. As a leader, ask yourself what kind of person you would follow and be that person.
