Response to breakaways

I believe how one goes after a ball in 1 v 1 is situation dependent. In a pure reaction mode, is mechanically faster to get a foot in front of a rolling shot than hands. As a GK in these situations, my only thought is to get something solid in front of the ball first and control it second.

The specific situation where hands first seems more useful to me is when the striker attempts to square step around me. I usually make my play for the ball at the start of the step. If I miss the dive, I frequently have a second opportunity to reach in and push/punch the ball away with my hands without having a foul being called. The third opportunity is the desparation lung back at a 45 degree angle with arms and head up (don't teach this).

These comments do not reflect tactics for rolling 50-50 balls (slide with hands to catch ball in front of face) or rolling 40-60 balls (body slide with arms over the ball like a tent).
