Response to tryout drills? U14

I like to start off with some pressure training and stretching. Make a 20x20 yard grid and split the players into 1's and 2's. 1's start in the middle and 2's line up around the grid with soccerballs. 1's must move around the grid going to different 2's. Have them perform different skills--heading, ball control, turning, etc. Have them go for 45 seconds then switch with somebody on the outside. After each person goes have them stretch then go on to another skill.

Next I would go right to a 4v4 game. You can use different restrictions and field setups to get what you want. If you want to see their dribbling and shielding skill, put the restriction on that they cannot pass the ball forward--must dribble to advance the ball. If you want to see if they recognize when to switch the ball, play with 4 goals. There are many different 4v4 games to play.

Once you get a feel for their individual skills and small group reactions, go to a full 11v11 game. Sometimes the problem here is that when you ask where they play, they all say forward. So tell them you want them to think of at least 2 positions that they will play and to try-out at them.

If you announce the results after the try-out, try to be honest with everyone. Some kids will be very upset. while others will be extemely happy at the same time. For those that do not make the cut. Give them options. Tell them what you are looking for. What they can do to improve. Different clubs that they can go to.

U-14 is a tricky age. I have seen kids quit soccer all together at this age is they don't make the cut.

Hope this helps. Good luck.:)
