Response to Player Evaluations

The first part of coaching is to determine where you are coaching to. This means goals!
If you have asked your team to determine their goals, you would then evaluate your team and players based on the team and player goals.
Everything would not be covered by goal setting but you would find this aproach very beneficial. The players can identify with rating and measuring their gains against their goals.
I hope that I'm addressing the issue here.
Please remember that goals are catagorized and each type have a purpose but some are much more valuable to you than others.
#1 Performance Goals
These goals are related to actions. They are by far the most important because they are measurable and controlable.
eg. I will learn to kick left footed this month;
Our team will develop 3 practical throw-in set plays this year;
We will be in better condition in the second half of the season because we'll do 4 seperate exercises at each practice.
#2 Result Goals
These are weak. You cannot usually measure these very well and cannot control your success at them.
eg. We will win the division title this year;
I will make the state team this season;
Our team will win the so and so tournament in July.
#3 Do Your Best Goals
These can be useful but much work is needed when developing them so that they can be understood.
eg. I'll do my best this year;
We'll do our best at the championship game.
Basically if you are going to do your best then you should have already set some Performance Goals.
In the end it takes alot of time to set realistic and meaningful goals. That's why good coaching makes good coaches and good players
