We have found a horse that has come up to our property we have found located the owner and it has been at our place going on 4 days, I have checked the paper looked for flyers called the sheriffs office etc.. does anyone know if there is a law etc. that if a horses owner is not located after some period of time in Texas that the horse could become adopted or owned by the keepers ? It is really a sweetheart and my daughters want to add it too our herd! I have checked several lost horse websites and have found nothing we are located in Texas
Just so you know, Texas law states that you MUST report any found livestock to the Sheriff's Dept. in the County where you found the livestock. This is supposed to done within five days after you find it. Then, the Livestock Deputy for that county, or the Sheriff's designee to that job, Animal Control, whoever, SHALL make a diligent search for the owners of the livestock.
If the owner can not be found, then the animal must be turned over to the Sheriff's Office/Police Dept. to posted in the Estray Book at the County Clerk's Office, and if no owner is found, it must be advertised, at least twice in a local paper, and then if no owner comes forward it is to be sold at public auction, or donated to an animal welfare group, such as the Houston SPCA, or similar group. If sold at auction the money has to be kept in escrow for 1 year in case an owner is located.
In answer to your question...NO...you can't just keep the animal. Sorry to be the one to break the bad news.
Get over yourself you idiot. This person is just trying to do the right thing for the horse and to respond with such an abrasive answer is unnecessary. Why don't you get a puching bag and take that anger out elsewhere?
Could you please be more specific? Did you loose a horse? Was it stolen?

Hello -- No you cannot just notify Sheriff and advertise and if no one comes forward keep a horse. A horse is considered livestock and livestock is property. Horse must be turned over to the authorities and a proper search/effort made to find owner. As an aside, if you keep the horse and the owner sees you with it -- you are in a peck of trouble. If you have the horse for 2 years and I can prove it's my horse I get it back -- like a stolen car.
Why be so ugly? They are just asking for info on what to do? If it was mine and they could not find me. I would be thankful they would take care of my horse. I am glad it is with someone who cares and not on a truck bound for Canada
