Response to A Contractors License to Clean Decks....I Don't Think so!

Phil ~

A few of the decks and fences I went to look over were also in differing states of disrepair. Loose boards. Wobbly railings. Nail heads pulling out. Twisted and splintering posts. Some of the joist fasteners were even missing!

Same with wood fencing. Lots of broken pickets near the bottom from bicycles, kids kicking on them and even snow removal from the sidewalks have damaged them.

The homeowners I met with all expressed an interest in having these items fixed and repaired. Actually it is a great way to expand your pricing and increase your profitability per job. Bid low on the cleaning and restoration, then make it up on the minor repairs.

Only one deck out of the five I looked at, and maybe two fences of the five yards I was in, were in top shape other than the finish itself!

I ask myself why would I as a homeowner want my deck/fence "renewed" without fixing the busted pieces???

Every community is different. In my area small minor repairs are excluded from the Contractors License. Only if we get involved in major changes will they want to come out and inspect the work.

But a License & Permit Bond and a minimum of $300,000 General Liability is required to operate within city limits. One job will take care of those expenses. Not too much to ignore and face possible stiff fines and legal actions.

Success and Regards... Mike
