Betsy Pender was a night janitor for the local high school in her home town. Every night, she would sweep the halls, empty the trash, and wash the black boards for the entire school. She took pride in what she did, eventhough she was only a janitor.
One night, as Ms. Pender was washing the black boards, a light went off in her head. At that very moment, she decided that instead of washing that old board, she could be a teacher who wrote on it.
Her decision was to go back to college and get a degree in education. She was told over and over again by school officials and other professionals that she didn't have the educational foundation to graduate from college. The odds were against her...... but she registered for college anyway.
It was a long 6 years (that's right...it took her 6 years) before she finally finished college. On graduation day, she had one of the biggest smiles on her face because she knew she did what others didn't believe she was able to accomplish.
To make a long story short, Ms. Betsy Pender went back to the exact same school she worked at as a janitor. But this time, she was a teacher! After her first year teaching, she was named teacher of the year for her school district and later won teacher of the year for her state.
Besty Pender is the essence of the American Dream. She accomplished exactly what she decided to do and you can do the same.
