Some yars ago....after a divorce, I found myself in Aspen, Colorado. I just wanted to "ease on down the road and relax for awhile and think about what I wanted to do the rest of my life".
I started hanging out in a certain restaurant with a small dance floor and horseshoe shaped bar. It was called a "locals hangout".
Well, after a few weeks I became "known" as a "local" also....and a buddy and I were rapping one evening about all the "riff-raff" that was coming in lately.
I tossed out the suggestion to the bartender that we should start up a "Locals Night" where ONLY "Locals" (or people INVITED) could get in.
The "tarbender" (that's what we called bartenders after 3 or 4 beers) mentioned the idea to the owner and the owner came over and sat down.
I told him it would be neat to have a "Locals ONLY" night where the "locals" would pay a fee to join the "club" and have the place available ONLY to locals.
To "make it interesting" I told him "I" would put it together and pay the owner 10% of the Club Dues each month....and...he would have MORE "locals" than before and less riff-raff. All he had to agree to was to give me "TUESDAY EVENING from 5pm til closing" for our "Club" members.
He agreed...so...my buddy and I decided to call it the "TUESDAY LOCALS CLUB". We made up posters and sign up forms and I chose to charge $50 a month to join...dues due on the 1st of every month.
Now...we had NO IDEA what response or reaction this would bring...we didn't care...we just wanted to "test it out".
The first few days there were a few disgruntled complainers who said they weren't payin anything to come here...AND...we had 28 "sign-ups"...by the end of our 3rd week...we had 160 sign-ups....$8,000 GROSS of which we had to give $800 to the owner and my buddy and I split $7200.
This went on for most of the summer and I enjoyed some "nice paydays" for doing notmuch of anything except overseeing the "Club".
We also brought in some bands on our Tuesdays and the owner also gave special deals on drinks and meals.
This went on for 3 mos until the owner felt we were making too much moolah off HIS premises so he cut my buddy and I out of the deal and he continued it himself (the greedy bast___)
It lasted for another few months but the owner didn't have the "moxey" to promote it so it died.
If I were to do it again...I'd have a lawyer draw up a TIGHT contract.
