  • My Addition to the IAIS Poetry

Not meant to discount and/or dismiss anything I have read on here. Please take as a sarcastic humorous look at poetry in general

      Poem on Poems
      by Trevor Gillespie

Every time a poem I read or hear
I know the cause is to evoke a tear
Or perhaps make one feel pain
But with me it is in vain
      To the ones extolling joy
My recurring response is “Oh Boy!”
To poems proclaiming beauties of life
They always omit realities and strife.
There are also ones conveying love
Does such nonsense come from up above?
The answer is an emphatic, “No!”
To the true poet I am a foe
Poems so often are blown out of proportion
      Exaggeration, mysticism, and pure contortion
Rarely is one dead on the mark
For plain poems create no spark
One has to write in ways to amaze
But I’m not akin to such a craze
I see poems for what they are
Aberrations meant to raise the bar
On what the reader will think and feel
But I know what is truly real
I say read the poem and understand
That the full meaning is far less grand
To understand the truth within the word
Dismiss three quarters of it as absurd.
