More on finding a good subject to create your info products on More on how to find a saleable subject on which to create info products

Yesterday I wrote an answer to Helen. She asked on which subject she should create her information products.

As you will see – if you read the posts – Helen has found two broad subjects (computers and Internet marketing) that she can write about. Her working background is computers, and she has a strong interest in Internet marketing.

The reason I didn’t discuss other potential subjects that Helen can write about, is that both of these subjects use to be profitable subjects to write about – provided you find the right angle, of course.

And - as I also wrote in my post - it’s usually much easier to create a product on a subject which you already have some solid knowledge about.

Besides, it’s important that you are interested in your subject. After all it takes some effort of you to create info products, even though you can surely cut down the time it takes, if you do it the smart way.

But what I didn’t address in my post, is the question of how you can find a subject to write on if you can.

Generally speaking it is always wise to follow the following rule:

Find the market FIRST! And be sure that the is both WILLING and ABLE to buy your products!

A common mistake you’ll see again and again, is that many new infopreneurs take a long time to create a product. And then they try to sell that product. But very often they just don’t seem to be able to sell the product.

Nobody wants to buy it!

The new infopreneur just don’t understand it. He or she is so sure that this is really a product that people need. It could help them so much. And the sad thing is that this project has been so time-consuming, and maybe also rather expensive.

The conclusion is, Don’t you ever try to sell people something that you think they NEED.

Instead try to sell them something they WANT.

Actually people do need very few things here in life.

For instance we need to eat and drink regularly.

But strictly speaking, you don’t NEED to a better car, a new house, some new furniture etc. We are just so used to think that we can’t live without these things. But a lot of people on earth live without these things. It may not be the most comfortable life, but you can certainly live without these things, if necessary.

Anyway, you’ll often hear people say that they need a lot of luxury things in order to survive. And if you meet someone who says that he or she “just needs to buy this beautiful car”, what he or she actually means, is that he or she very strongly WANTS to have that car.

Do you see my point?

If you try to sell people information they really WANT TO BUY, you will have an easy time finding a subject to write on, provided, of course, that you are able to write on precisely that subject.

So if you want to earn money in the information business, always first find a group of people who that WANTS TO BUY WHAT YOU CAN PROVIDE.

Do you see how much easier your life will be, if you first find a market that is willing and able to buy the kind of information you can sell them?

I assure you that this is one of the most important factors in succeeding in the information business!

“But how do I find such a market”, you may ask.

There are several different ways to find the people who wants to buy your future products. Here are two ways to do it:

1) FIND OUT WHAT ALREADY SELLS!

This is rather easy – both online (on the Internet) and offline (in the “real” world).

If you see a certain product that is being advertised again and again, it’s reasonable to conclude that there is a market for it. After all it usually takes some money to advertise a product, even on the Internet.

So if you notice several info products on the same subject, and these products are sold over a long period of time, it’s usually safe to move forward and TEST this category of products.

You can do this in several ways:

A) You can either create a short report or a tape and try to sell that.
B) You can also sell a product created by someone else.

2) FIND OUT WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO BUY

There are also several ways to do that.

On the Internet you can regularly visit discussion boards, newsgroups, Amazon.com etc.

And when you are there, closely observe what people wants to buy or are in fact already buying. The smart thing is that there is no guesswork here. You will know precisely what people wants to buy if you really hold your eyes open.

So this will show you a lot of subjects to write on.

Then find pick out a subject (among the subjects you’ve found) that you are really interested in. The more the better.

Next step is to go forward and create your product or have someone else create your product.

Which way you want to take is up to you!

But I would strongly advice you to always TEST the saleability of every new subject. Only take small steps forward to reduce the risk of failure – especially if you have a rather tight budget.

At the same time I would really like to encourage you to not giving up too fast. Many products have appeared to be a non-saleable at first. But then later on, as the product itself or the marketing process has been slightly changed, the product suddenly sold like crazy.

Only constant TESTING can show you which products will succeed, and which will not.

The important thing is: Don’t ever fall so much in love with your product that you are not willing to drop it and move on to testing other products.

Of course I am here talking about products you are selling for profit! If you have a more idealistic product, things might be totally different. Then you may sell – or give away – your product even though you don’t seem to be able to find a large market for your product. But then you don’t do it in order to profit from your product.

Hope this may help you!

Sincerely,

Klaus
