What is a good dog joint supplement? Chondritin/Glucosomine/MSM combination, I assume. What is an economical/safe/effective brand?

Are you familar with them?  That is the correct spelling, they are on line but will send you one of their catalogs.  I give Sage their supplement for joints, she has been on it for years.

John, I give Cosequin - that's the brand name, and considered to be very consistent with their formula. I purchase mine from ebay. I keep searching till I find a good price and bid or some are marked "buy it now". I got 3, 100 count bottles for $55.00. That's darn good for 300 chewable tabs. My vet charges almost $90 for a 60 count bottle. When I told her what I paid for the same product on ebay, I honestly think she thought I was lying.

Cosequin

If you do a google search -- you come up with all sorts of wonderful features an benefits with this petro chemical.

And I feel really impudent right now that I cannot put my hands on the exact ingredients of it. I know I posted what its properties are in the past because when it came highly recommended I too used it to try to help Flame. But it didn't. So I dug a little and found it didn't contain anything that could possibly heal joint degradation. There was some pain reliever in it -- and I forget what that was but I do recall it wasn't something I wanted Flame ingesting everyday.

Now I still have some "happy pills" from the vet that I will dispense if he has taken a bad tumble or just cannot get his fat butt off the couch by Sunday afternoon = But I do that rarely.

Hi Rick

July 4 2009, 12:34 PM

I hope that sometime you can re-discover the link. I have done a lot of goggling today and can not come up with where you say all the sugar is coming from

It has 500mg of high purity glucosamine, 400mg of low molecular weight chondroitin & 5mg of manganese ascorbate. Also some brewers yeast and beet pulp in small amounts.

John -- email if you need a link to acquire.

I get 16 oz packages and using the enclosed scoop -- I can supplement at both of Flames feeding times for about 70% the cost of the non working drugs.

I have posted this before but the search feature won't go back far enough to link. :>(

The link worked fine, Rick

Thanks, Rick! I do remember you discussing this before. But, then I did not have an immediate need. Little Bell gets around quite well for a dog her age, but it would be good to supplement her joints, I think. The product you use does not appear to have anything in it that would cause an adverse reaction. Very interesting. And, the fact that it is helping Flame is a great testament.

I ordered a couple of 8# tubs of Ortho-Flex. Lots of good reading on that site. What an interesting blog, too. The current story features a Doberman rescue.

I always call Nature's Farmacy

July 4 2009, 10:09 PM

They usually have someone on staff who will be happy to discuss what you need.I've called them for everything from holistic flea control to Giardia treatment. I have StarPuppy on CCMplus for her arthritus, plus Greenalina Algae Caps for her heart, immune system, internal health and detox. They all get Digestive Enhancer (Probiotics)

It's my understanding, thatglucosomine ect is great, but you need it in a complex to be most effective. At the minimum it should be a combo of Glucosomine, Condroiton, MSM and Ester C. From what I understand,Ester C is the only vit c that dogs can employ. They manufacture their own c, but ordinary vit c is not able to be utalized. Interesting.

Incidently, I knew my chiropractor had studied animal adjusting, and when StarPuppy started limping and favoring her bad hind leg, she actually would move on three legs. He began adjusting her, and the improvement was remarkable. That was when she was three years old. I was afraid of hip displaysia, but the Xray showed arthritus. She's now ten yrs old, and has been on 4 legs since then. The last Xray, taken around a year ago, showed NO change in the arthritus. It was still there, but has not deteriorated at all in these years.
P.S. sorry, I forgot to add, she's been on the CCMplus ect for these 6 years along with the Chiropractic adjustments.

But I'd just call Nature's Farmacy...They are great to do business with.their # is 1-800-733-4981

Auntie that is what Sage is on

July 5 2009, 6:58 AM

the ccm stuff.  She has been on it for several years now.  NF is very helpful.  I have them both on the dogzymes as well.  Sage was limping off and on and has improved on this stuff however still limps once in awhile after a lot of exercise but who wouldn't at her age!  LOL

Yep, that CCM is great stuff

July 6 2009, 9:10 PM

StarPuppy has been on it for around 7 years. I can't afford to give it to everybody...but as I said, StarPup was really bad.I knew something was wrong, because she wouldn't hold a sit, but would bounce up. So, I thought she had hip dysplasia, but the xray showed arthritus in the left hip joint. I decided to tackle it holistically, and called N.Farm. and that was what they suggested. so it and the weekly Chiro. treatments have kept her on 4 legs. she would limp badly on 3 after a romp and run, and of course now-a-days she can run like a deer and doesn't limp at all. But the thing that really impressed me was the follow up Xray, taken about 2 years ago, showed no progression of the Arthritus at all! It was just the same. I thought that was pretty darn great...still do!
