Staph

Da'Kari broke out with little bumps all over. I didn't know what caused it, whether it was something in the yard, something in the house or something she ate. I gave her benadryl for a few days and the bumps went away pretty much but then she started losing some of her hair in patches on her hips and a little on the top of her back. She also aquired a "smell" and so I suspected staph. I took her to the vet and they said pretty much the same.

They said it could have been a number of things that threw her system out of whack and the bacteria could have been caused by the heat which has been bad for a couple weeks. It is starting to cool down a bit the last couple days.

Anyway, they gave her antibiotics but was wondering if anyone here has dealt with this and if there are things that I can do to soothe her and to help it along.

yes... I went through many many months of this with Lucas.  The vet kept saying staph and pyoderma.  I remember bathing Lucas 1 or 2 times a week with a special shampoo.  He lived on antibiotics for months.  I changed foods, did everything I could think of.  It was awful, hopefully you wont go through all this.

Lucas still has coat issues that I think are allergy related.  I have this stuff that Nancy D told me about... miracle coat... it helps!  Get some!  I'll look later for the website, I have to get ready for work.  Oh.. KV Vet has it I believe.

I hope she doesn't linger on with this, I hate seeing her coat look like this. I noticed that the odor is not as strong and she has been on the antibiotics 2 days now. Maybe it is going to help.

Thanks Betty, I will check into the Miracle coat for her.

Miracle Coat

They have 2 products - a waterless shampoo that you spray on the coat, work into a lather and towel off. Makes the coat really nice. Also, there is a Miracle Coat leave in conditioner that I usually spray on after brushing; also good for the coat. You can order it online at just about any pet site, but if you have Tractor Supply, good pet store you may be able to buy it locally.

I use the spray

Sage can get lick sores and honestly, it's the only thing that seems to make a difference onces she starts on one.  I love the smell too.

I've not used the shampoo because I usually just wash mine and rinse however, I'd like to know if they have a shampoo that you can use as a regular way or does this one give you the option Nancy?

I wish I had known about this stuff when I was in the thick of it with Lucas.  I remember the odor too Diane, not pleasant!  Good luck!

Miracle Coat

Waterless shampoo is used just as I explained. I'm not sure it would work as a regular shampoo. As for having a regular shampoo, I don't know. My dogs won't even go in the bathroom with the tub and under those circumstances, there's no way I could get them in the tub. I'm not in favor of baths on a regular basis. Of course, if you're showing that his a different story.

baths

July 9 2009, 9:30 AM

Under normal times my dogs get probably 4 or 5 baths a year.  When Lucas had staph the vet said he needed to be bathed a lot because of infection I think it was.  I don't care to bath them that much and of course Lucas was horrified!  LOL

Under those circumstances, I agree. Otherwise, I think we are on the same page.

Well dang

July 9 2009, 12:58 PM

Tractor Supply didn't have it so I am gonna ride up to Knoxville this weekend and hopefully find it.

I don't bathe Da'Kari much either and when I do, I do it outside with the hose, she doesn't seem to mind it that way so much, I think she likes the cool water running over her. Through the winter she doesn't get one so that tells you how often LOL.

Anyway, the antibiotics must be working because the odor is going away which surprises me that it is so quickly. Keeping my fingers crossed that this is gonna get taken care of fast.

Glad to hear she is improving. I don't know how far your drive is, but if too much, I'd call first to see if they carry it. Otherwise you can order it from drs.foster&smith catalog or just google their name. Any number of catalogs carry Miracale Coat products.
