The Dispersal Draft won't make much difference, I feel.
Just taking the TOP 9 RATED players on every team (the # allowed to be protected and NOT accounting for leaving GOOD players exposed that are near or already announced retirement, like a Messier, for instance), and you will see that the difference for the most part of the next BEST rated player on each team is really quite minimal! Sure, a couple of GREAT teams may lose a good player, but they will be getting back an average to good player in return anyway! The resulting balance of numbers will only be a Ratings point or two difference on average!
I'd rather see the draft go TWO rounds, adding more suspense, choice, option, and equalization. There's a lot more suspense involved when TWO players can be lost from your team, as you can't simply DRAFT YOUR OWN PLAYER, and know you're safe for the rest of the draft, if you choose. With TWO rounds, you'd still have a player that could be taken until it comes around to your pick AGAIN, and THEN if you've STILL decided you want to keep the team you've worked so hard to build, AND no one has taken a player from your team yet, then you can. I think it just adds a LOT MORE DRAMA AND SUSPENSE, which = FUN! And in the end, it's going to be much like the famous "HAT TRADES"; ForMOST TEAMS, you're most likely going to get someone VERY CLOSE to the range of player that you give up.
Otherwise, if only 1 Round is performed, I'd rather see it as Artur has suggested - protect 6 players: 3 forwards, 2 d-men & a goalie. NOW we'll see some weaker teams benefitting! NOW we'll see some nervous teams wondering "WHO'S IT GONNA BE THAT I LOSE ?!?!?!" THIS would be fun !!!
Take a look at the rosters; protecting MORE than nine pretty much leaves the whole process pointless.
