Something I wanted to say for a while now...(another controversy ?!?!? - no, let's bring the old one
by Artur (no login)
After this postseason, let's vote for allowing tripple-shifting. If all goes well, let's vote for allowing one player play in all positions on the same line, you know, like in badminton. Will sure make deciphering those stats easier. We need to do it because with only double shifting allowed, there is still some uncertainty left in this game, and this is bad, very bad.
In case I didn't make my point clear, double-shifting sucks!!!
Have a good night

Come on boys, where's the playoff trash talk?
Let's start having fun and laughing at each other as we try to convince everyone else that we're going to win.
I'll start: The RIOT are up 3-0 in their series against the Scorpions. I noticed that only I and a couple of other people predicted that I would win the series. It ain't over yet, obviously, but most of you guys didn't even have me winning 3 games, so :P to you! Yeah! That's right! You heard me! I said :P !
So there. The fans are going crazy down at the DisorderPlex ticket office. The last game saw only a few people shipped across 9th Avenue North to the local jail, but if the team wins game four (aw hell, if they lose it'll probably be worse) to advance to the next round, we could have a full-scale RIOT! Those of us in team management wouldn't have it any other way. Mayor Fiasco (er, Fiacco) doesn't like us too much because of our parties at "Dancers at the Boiler Room" and a few broken bus shelter windows, but his buddies down at the police station love us; we keep them in work.

Hey fellas. I'm starting up a brand spanking new FHL league, and I still have half a dozen GM spots open. If any of you are interested, drop me a line.

Obviously I need help putting my team lines together. Without resorting to cheating (triple shifts, etc), are their combinations of players that work better? Should all forward on a line have "similar" ratings in key categories or do we just lump our "stars" on line 1?
Any insight would be appreciated.

Does anyone still have the rights to Lemieux? Or does he re-enter the draft next year? I bet that 1st overall pick in NSHL 10 will be a tough trade. What would his ratings be? Would they be what they were when he retired? Could I ask any more questions?
Anyway I think it's good for the NHL that he is coming back. It will make things more interesting for sure.
I wish him the best of luck and hope it works out for him. And this is coming from a non-Lemieux fan.

a time has come to say a word or 2 about an issue that was on my plate for the second season now, ever since the Beagles franchise bacame known as Beagles.
In the time of a complete mess with the elections south of the border, I say that the real problem that people missed is right here, in NSHL. The change of line rules pales in comparison whith what I am going to gripe about.
Every time I use the find function to search the daily game and stats reports, looking for the results of my Eagles, I constantly get hits for BEAGLES a few times before I get to see what I am looking for. Tonight the pain and suffering culminated when the Beagles were featured in a doubleheader before the Eagles hit the scoreboards.
Given that Eagles were part of the league for much longer time than many other league franchises, I would like to ask the league to have have Beagles change their name for the next season and ban any names that have "egles" inside. Also, while at it, please, rename Mike Eagles as Mike Orlov (Eagles in Russian)
and make this change in effect in all NSHL record books for the past and the future.
If you think that my request is unreasonable or if you don't have any sense of humor, than by God, write something funny yourselves, 'cause I just turned 30 and feel geedy.
Cheers.

Hi everybody.
Sedsey: I don't think that the league is all up in arms because your team won the Cup last season. I, for example, thought it cool that an underdog team won. I know it's impossible not to feel attacked when people want to outlaw a strategy that helped you win the Cup. But the truth is that many GMs, myself included, feel that it is ridiculous to have five skaters playing the entirety of a sixty minute hockey game. Playing guys out of position is one thing, and you can point to many real-life situations where that happens. But putting the same group of guys on every single line that hits the ice? I think that most of us will agree that this is unacceptable. Or maybe not. We really need to put this up for a vote.
My opinion:
I don't mind seeing players played out of position....especially on special teams.
I had been thinking that forwards shouldn't play D, or vice-versa, but after reading some good real-life examples, I think it's OK.
What I would like to see is the practice of playing the same five guys on every line outlawed.
Nobody can point to ANY real-life situation where a coach doesn't make a single line change in a game. The argument that "this isn't real-life" doesn't seem valid when we already base things retirements and draftable players on real-life.
In real-life, there have been a few situations where guys get triple-shifted....but not on every set of lines, for the whole game.
I think it should be OK to have guys double-shifted, but not triple-shifted. There should be at least 10 different guys that see ice time on a team's lines.
We could enforce a rule like this programmatically, with a simple program that would go through a team's lines and check each set of lines (5 on 5, 4 on 4, 5 on 4, 5 on 3, 4 on 5, 3 on 5), making sure that at least two different lines are used per each set.
What does everybody think? I think that a fair compromise can be achieved that sees this league run with a good balance between fantasy and reality.
Posted on Nov 3, 2000, 5:59 PM from IP address 204.83.206.70
The NSHL is made up of 3 classes of teams. The great teams (about 4 or 5 of them), the good teams (8 to 10 of them), and then the rest of the league.
When we had streaks and slumps any team in the league had a chance in any given season to get lucky and be able to win some games. It made things a littlew more even. Now, the divisions in teams are clear and barring a VERY lucky upward rerate on the farm during the season (rare indeed), there is little chance that a team can close the gap to improve amybe upgrade which class of teams they are in.
Last season I had Fischer made an across the board improvement for me in the rertaes ONLY b\c I double-shifted him on occasion and during some injury times I even played him at forward. Without using that he would have not improved and my team would be worse for it.
If we take out triple shifting (double-shifting is not a problem as everyone does it from time to time and occurs in real life as well), then we wait until the next thing comes along in order for the weaker teams to try and catch the stronger ones. It is inevitable.
Maybe the time has come to admit that taking streaks\slumps out of the NSHL was the most moronic thing that has occured in the NSHL. It has lead to the triple shifting and will lead to more "abuses."
Posted on Nov 3, 2000, 10:33 AM from IP address 24.66.255.211
When I beat Tetzy last year I didn't triple shift anyone and all my players played their position, so
it is possible that upsets can occur if you keep to some logical lines. ( even witout streaks)
I thought that after all the talk last season about what happened with that GM that was sent away that nobody would cheat again this season-
I guess I was wrong. I agree with Gord's ideas
and lets get on with the season.
Posted on Nov 5, 2000, 1:53 AM from IP address 24.72.26.27
The idea is terrible that Gord has put forth. Normally Gord does a great job as commish (which is a tough job at the best of times), but this time he loused up (perfectly normal as he is human...or at least we shoudl hope so ).
There is NOTHING wrong with double-shifting regular strength. The problem is with triple shifting AND playing players at a position they are not dressed as. NOW, just to say, nobody has cheated at all. There was no previous rule against it so therefore it was not cheating. The rule change should also not come til the off-season. Putting it in right now, in the middle of the season, is a HUGE mistake.
I myself have decided I will follow the rule, but in doing so I am gonna throw the rest of my games in order to get the best draft pick possible. There can be no way I could ever catch up to the super 5 unless I were to be able to use double-shifting and playing players in a position I choose (not the way Easton or Chase did BUT by dressing and playing them in the position I dress them as). I therefore need to hope for a super go-up on the farm and a great few draft picks in order to ever have a chance.
Also, notice that most of the complainers were from the uper echelon teams? Plus, you will be hearing more from me on this. If people can complain about what they do not like then I can do the same.
Posted on Nov 5, 2000, 2:33 AM from IP address 24.66.255.211
LC has dressed players out of position, though they still played at their designated spots.
(Since I'm under the microscope, I guess I should say that Drake played PK D on Line 3 3 on 5..heh)
I think LC used Haggerty on the first 3 lines in one game this year, but generally speaking, no player from LC has triple shifted at even strength.
For fun, since I was a 'rotten bastard' or some such anyway, I dressed my guns on the LW against the Foo at home recently...the Foo doubled on even strength and PP...I lost 5-2.
I played the Thistles with my 3 D men dressed as forwards, but playing their regular positions even strengh...only Heerema doubled, I believe...I lost 2-1.
I played the Muffs...I lost.
My record is 5-3.
Everything that I know about this 'system', I have not employed this season, and most of the playoffs for that matter, in the interests of mollifying the element that likes to throw casual insults, and those who just said they had some qualms, but it seems the efforts are in vain.
whatever.
I find it funny that my 4th place, "mediocre" team (admittedy thin because of all the depth I traded in part to make this plan work for me, by the way) is causing such panic...I could understand if my team was 6-2, but 5-3???
heh
Anybody who had complained about the scoring totals is a whiner...Coffey is sure running away with things...whoa...look out for those HUGE totals...heh heh...such is doing a lot for me in the grand scheme, to have a guy that is going to retire put up the points...I can feel Biron and McCarthy learning how to be 9's!!! heh
But fine...while pausing to reiterate that pulling this out on me after a season has started is tres bogus...I'll suffer the consequences of being YOUR NEELY CUP CHAMPION (woo hoo! LC champs!! Psychos win!! yah!! OK!) and lose games to keep the town cryers happy.
Trevor...I don't know if I will go through with it or not, but I would suggest at this point that you think of dropping all your guys that need it down to the farm and hope for the best...I had good luck with rerates last year.
Where was the lie?
...the cheating??
(thanks for pointing this obvious factoid out there Trevor)

I will say one thing right now.
The next time I am in Vancouver we are getting together for a 'talk'.

I agree that there should be some changes in the line-up rules.
The new rules should take into consideration that some players like Gretzky and Bourque somtimes played over 12 minutes a period.
Also if there is an injury ( or not )some players may change positions during the season.
Dressing all your platers as left wingers is cheating and no player execpt the goalie plays all 60 minutes. Double shifting is done all the time in real life and should be allowed in our league. If there is some restriction placed on double shifting because of Fa., it would make sense.

"We played it so well, they had to change the rules"
by Sedsey (no login)
Ah yes, just as the NHL eliminated 4 on 4 years ago to try and stop the mighty Oilers, so too do the factions within the NSHL attempt to cage the Psychos!
I could agrue this for paragraphs, but I will spare you...
1) Change after season has started and strategy planned is bad form to me. It sure would have changed my draft and my offseason activities.
2) The argument against using players in whatever fashion you choose seems to rest with a sense that realism is being compromised...aside from the fact that Fa doesn't seem that important, I say poppycock!
Anybody ever hear somebody say, "Boy, they should put Housley at wing, cuz he's a shitty D."???
Well, same goes for Al MacInnis on LC.
3) LC are the Neely Cup Champs, but it wasn't easy by any stretch...upsets not allowed??
4) Without s/s, fledgling teams have a hard time rerating players...shouldn't everybody at least have a chance? If all a guy plays are 5 players, then he is not making his team all that great, is he?
5) How do you know that this system can't be beat legit? Or if everybody did this, then I would be disadvantaged, I would think. Besides, you can only dress 6 LW's...check my lines...right now I use 3. (though that could change! If I can run my team how I choose, that is)
6) Traders, Infantry, Muffs, etc. are too far in front talent wise for anybody like Terrors, Beagles, or even your Neely Cup Champion Psychosis to ever catch up...anybody remember the last few drafts???
More players have value in the league...should we all lose until we can get a half dozen 90's players? Now, teams thought of of dregs have some guys they can trade.
I'm sick of this (and that ws the short version!! heh heh)
But, I guess time will tell...
But, either way...

I checked the lines quickly...6 teams are using double shifted playes at even strength...but 11 teams haven't fixed their teams either, according to Gord.
I didn't check the positions (should have...too lazy now)...
Lastly, where was all this protest back when Larry asked for people's opinions during the offseason???
I seem to remember that nobody had any objections at the time...those that were available, that is.

First, thanks to Sedsy for replying to his own message. At least he knows that somebody is reading them.
There are, as usual, a number of issues here.
1) This is a fantasy league. Where part of this league, though, is fantasy and which part is real? I thought that the whole idea of a fantasy hockey league was to pemit ordinary shmoes like us to be a GM of an NHL team. That's the fantasy. Almost everything else within the limitations of the HLS2 simulator itself should be as realistic as possible. That's why it's called a simulator. So let's try to keep the hockey operations as real as possible. If Al MacInnis sucks at his position then trade him. Got a bad team? Make a trade. Develop players. There's a shocker! Trade for training camps. Hell, I know it's not easy, but then if it was it wouldn't be any fun. There aren't too many things that I am doing today that I was doing in 1996.
2) The rule changes that Gord sent out today are specific and concrete. With the GM program permitting everyone to view everyone else's lines it will be up to us to police ourselves. For example, don't think that I didn't peek at Tetzy's lines after the Traders dumped the SunDogs 5-3 in last night's season opener. Too bad Ace adjusted both teams' lines. Oh well. (Note: Vote Artem Chubarov for NSHL9 Rookie-of-the-Year!)
I do agree that the rule changes should come in the off season, but if I am not mistaken, Ace made the rule change before he played the games, so aside from not announcing the change, there is no arguement. Does it change your draft strategy? Maybe. I draft the best player, period. Others draft for a specific position. The only time I have done the latter in the NSHL was with Mika Noronen in NSHL4. I needed a backup goalie to Barrasso and have spent the last 4 seasons protecting him and spending camps on him. Of course, I would have preferred at the time to have Damphousse or Luongo, but with the current situation with Buffalo things are looking rosie.
I don't know if some teams will ever catch up to the "team quality" of the Traders or Muffs, et al. The Traders got a great kick start with 6 1st round draft picks early on in the NSHL. The rules (with exceptions) have given large roster teams lots of protection spots. Streaks and slumps helped me a alot in NSHL6 and were sorely missed in NSHL7. Time will tell if I have recovered more than last season.
But I can live with the new changes. Who triple shifts? I don't. I do double shift certain players on even strength lines and now I can't. But if nobody can then it's not a big deal.
No one is saying that there can't be upsets. Ask the Crunch when they toppled the Traders. But don't base your arguements on a process used by a former GM who has been drop kicked out of two (yes, two) fantasy hockey leagues for using that process. It was an interesting experiment and in the beginning of August nobody thought that this was cheating. However, it is unsportsmanlike and ungentlemenlike.
You can read more about this issue on NSHL.com on the Constitution, Rules & Guidelines page. http://www.nshl.com/rules/
Sedsy's letter to the League is there under the rubric "The China Syndrome" along with a page devoted to Understanding the HLS2 Simulator and another to rationalize how the re-rate Monster works.
So let's keep fantasy as a concept, and keep the spirit of wanting to better understand the HLS2 simulator instead of trying to circumvent it.

"So let's try to keep the hockey operations as real as possible"
If Mike Keenan of the Boston Bruins wanted to put Kyle McLaren at C to screen the net on the PP, would the league say no?
What about Mathieu Dandenault in Detroit...whoops, we're short on D...he's a D...yikes, we need somebody at forward...he's a forward.
Derian Hatcher plays up front on the PP for the Stars...
Mark Recchi plays the D point in Philly...
Greg Hawgood took a game as 4th line C in vancouver last week when Brashear was a late scratch...
Ever see a PP unit (or parts of it) stay out for the 2 full min.?
I'll stop. heh
"If Al MacInnis sucks at his position then trade him."
I can't seem to trade young guys like Chara and Biron...you want to know what GM's offer for guys over 30???
I picked him up in the first place thinking that I would need a point man for the power play...it doesn't seem to quite work out...c'est la vie, though.
"Got a bad team? Make a trade. Develop players. There's a shocker! Trade for training camps"
I do. There's where I am far more able to handle this than I would have been at the beginning of NSHL 7...I have Trebil, Therien, and others that have farmed up...Heerema is now maxed offensively, etc etc...
Training camps blow...crucial numbers are rarely developed.
"Hell, I know it's not easy, but then if it was it wouldn't be any fun."
I've put in a scary amount of time on this, as have others, so I don't think it's been easy...and I think it's fun. (The playoffs were great!!!)
I should point out...in the reg. season, I beat a lot of team with my lineup witchery...but not the Traders...twice.
"Does it change your draft strategy? "
Well, seeing as I would now be stuck with Nik Andersson at RW, whom I didn't protect (and would have)...I would have drafted RW Glen Metropolit instead of D Johnsson.
"But don't base your arguements on a process used by a former GM who has been drop kicked out of two (yes, two) fantasy hockey leagues for using that process"
I can't help but feel that there is an Easton Associative Persecution Complex behind it all...I made a regretable decision to reintroduce everybody's fav during the playoffs...but I apologized for the lack of insight...
I like to write...
I joke...
But...I am not Easton. Not even close.
I'm not telling anybody what to do with their teams or this league...I just want to be allowed to run mine any way I see fit.
Say no to an NSHL Police State, where everybody suspiciously looks to their opponents lines after a loss in the hope of catching a punishable transgression...
Gotta keep the drama!!! heh

As I said, this should have been brought up as soon as the last season ended, that's my fault.
I can understand if it is too soon to make such a change in rules, and would be perfectly willing to wait until next year, if we make the change at all! If there is enough interest to do it right away, however, then I think that is what we should do.
Time for my little spiel on why this may make things more interesting around here. Being a GM where all you need to be concerned about are 5 or 6 players, regardless of their positions is easy. A GM who has to worry about keeping a roster stocked with an appropriate number of players at every position, on the other hand, has a measurably harder job.
Keep in mind that some other things may have to considered as well, such as players having a "permanent" position to start each season. Anyway, that's another story...
I think putting this rule in place will accomplish a few things:
1. It will encourage more trade discussions, as GMs need to fill certain positions more responsibly.
2. By eliminating the double and triple-shifting, a GM won't be able to "load up" certain players in hopes of favorable re-rates.
3. All of the whining about Easton will finally be put to rest, big smile.
How's that? Just a little to get you started...
