With the last of the Canadian M113s moving towards the scrap heap it would be interesting to try and document some of the history of the 1143 or so M113 series vehicles purchased by Canada over the years.
When were the first M113 APCs purchased for starters?
I think the first ones were purchased during 1965/1966. They would have been basic M113s with literally no Canadian modifications at all. They also may have had the C42 radios mounted and the applicable antennas. Can anyone confirm that? They for sure would have had the original track.
Can we list all the M113 variants used and any modifications specific to Canadian versions?

Well the first one was purchased in 1965. It is actually in the Canadian War Museum, painted white with UN markings. It was knocked out by a mine in Croatia I beleive and was sent back to Borden for evaluation. It was prepared as a monument so all the suspension has been welded tight and it sits too high.
when they first came out they were bog standard M113A1s with the original US track. The first big mod was the installation of the dozer blade on Engineer and Pioneer section vehciles.
I am actually researching this as a PHD research project.
I seem to recall a CFTO for mounting Carl Gs at the edge of the cargo hatch on M113s. Basically a short post that the weapon's leg holder would slip over. That said, I do not recall ever seeing the actual mod fitted to a carrier.
I would be very interested in publishing a Weapons of War booklet on the M113 in Canadian Service (as well as others on the variants). I don't see this as competing with Barry's planned work but rather as complementary.
If the PHd thesis can be used as a basis for this please give it some thought. I ask for 6500-7000 words and I pay $200 for the right to publish.
