If you have not seen this two part news story you should watch it.

It paints an interesting picture of what the Canadian Forces went through in the 1980s.

There are some good images of armour and troops as well.

In Part 1 at about 6:51 you get to see a runaway Leopard C1 (early version) run into the back end of a Taurus ARV.

In Part 2 at about 2:30 there is some good footage of a winter cam Grizzly (no prop guards) in Norway.

The Dark Years.......

July 29 2012, 9:35 AM

As a soldier who enlisted and served in the dark years, I can certainly relate to these videos. Pierre Trudeau was no friend to us in the ranks. I was one of those air defence gunners in Lahr, using equipment that my grandfather used in WW2, we were the laughing stock of our allies when it came to air defense.
Oh, the memories........painful, but oh so real......
BTW, I enlisted in 1979 as 021 Infantry, re-badged to 031 Artillery in 1982, and CFR'd to intelligence in 1996, retiring in 2001.

There's no life like it!

Nice find Jason. As always, the CBC facts are pretty suspect, but biased reporting aside its a good snapshot.

Here's some self-loving CF recruiting ad from the same era:

As much as things change....

They always seem to stay the same.

It's all kind of surreal that the same pieces of equipment that the talk about in the show are in the news today. The fighters, new ships, armoured vehicles and man power issues are all front page today.

Another interesting note is that all the new air defense systems bought after this show (ADATS, Sky Guard, Javelin) have now gone the way of the Dodo.

It would be interesting to see what will happen in another 20-30 years.

Yes it is a reminder of our time

Yes guys to see these episodes, I am reminded the time when we served our country. Even today I wonder how we would fare if we had an opponent who was modern. I do feel it would be a bad wake up call for our politicians who aren't really in touch with our needs.
