Community Service for High School StudentsJanuary 24 2008 at 8:51 AM Score 2.0 (1 person) | High School Parent (Login ResidentLynd) |
| Does anyone have a child in the Lyndhurst High School who has been putting their hours into this Community Service that the High School is mandating that each student put in 60 hours before graduation.
I don't understand why this is being done considering that the HS kids are going to the after school programs and helping kids out with their homework. My daughter watches her sister after school and helps her with her homework, is that going to count? She also does community service outside of Lyndhurst will that be accepted?
Just want to hear from parents who have dealt with the HS with reference to this situation. Thanks. |

This is not just for Schools. The Church has this now for Confirmation.
Most of these kids have to do more community service than those that get convicted of crimes. This is just stupid. It should not be allowed and I believe it might be illegal to require it.

I do not understand the community service thing either, I have asked my child about it too and she said that it has to been service done in school, but she is not sure how it works either. I think that service they perform outside of the school should count as well. I am all for them giving to the community, but I think the school should better advise the parents as to how and what is expected. |

Community service is a valiant thing to give to your community, but to make it a requirement for a Graduation or Confirmation is wrong. Required Community service is for convicted criminals. The pros and cons of providing community service should be explained to students and they should be allowed to opt out.
I think when given a choice to give back or provide for the community, most would gladly give some time. Making is a requirement is WRONG.

I feel that this is a ridiculous idea. I believe that students and kids should do comunity service on a voluntary basis. This will allow them to enjoy what they do. If the kids are forced in to doing community service by making it a requirement, they will not enjoy themselves and not want to do volunteer work as an adult.
The best solution would be to let the students know of all of the different volunteer work available so they can choose wheather or not to do volunteer work. Try it, you might be extremely surprised of the difference in volunteerism we get from our kids. They're not as bad or as dumb as some people think.
Remember the old saying, "You attract more bees with honey than you do with salt." The saying might not be 100% acurate, but nonetheless it is very true.
Remember we were all kids once too. How would you feel if you were forced into community service and not volunteer your services instead.
Volunteering should be fun and satisfying, not stressful or mandatory. |

Unfortunatley Lyndhurst is getting worst because no one works hard. This entire chain proves it. Lazy = Losers. WAKE UP LOSERS. Teach your kids how hard work pays off. NOT CRYING LIKE FAT LAZY LOSERS. WAKE UP. Hard work is the difference between your kids and successful kids. Oh my GOD the idiocy in this town kills me |

No one is saying they do not want their kids to work. Forced or required Community service should not be a requirement for Graduation. Kids today put in more time on homework and school that they did years ago, if they choose to work they should, note the key word there is CHOOSE. When they come of age they will enter the workforce and have to pay their dues like everyone else, not having done community service, will not destroy their work ethic.

Nobody chooses to work. As a good parent you should teach them about the importance of a good work ethic. And a lazy parent is a poor example. You should teach by example. Stop making excuses and get off your fat bottom. LAZY = LOSER
Since you are setting a poor example it makes sense that it should be a requirement for graduation. Hopefully the community service requirement can teach your kid about the concept of a work ethic. Someone has to.
Kids today do not put in more time on homework and school that they did years ago. Maybe your teachers were too lazy and never gave you any. Look what it has done to you.
When they come of age they will enter the workforce and be lazy and do everything that they can to slide by without doing much because their lazy parents were poor examples. I hope that you now understand.

Yes, I understand that you are an idiot and make assumptions about all people, because you obviously know everything.
You really put me in my place. You must feel special now.

NEWSFLASH - "Lazy Parents Should Not Post Messages if They Don't Want to be Criticized"
I understand that I am an idiot. I am also woman enough to admit it. I also know that you come off as a typical complaining lazy parent from Lyndhurst, New Jersey, 07071. Other than that I am not sure.
As for your place.. I don't know where your place is. But I really would prefer not to be near it.
Special.. I feel most special after a warm salted bath. And you?

OH MY LORD...LOOK AT THIS. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT A SIMPLE QUESTION WOULD TURN TWO PEOPLE, WHO probably HAVE NEVER MET, INTO A COMEDY TEAM...
A SIMPLE QUESTION, FOLKS...MAN. AND FROM THE MODERATOR; WHO MODERATES THE MODERATOR?
AND WHY IS THE MODERATOR MAKING COMMENTS? IF THIS IS A COMMUNITY MESSAGE BOARD, TO HAVE THE COMMUNITY COMMUNICATE, THEM PERHAPS SOMEONE CAN TELL ME (no not you, moderator, someone else)
WHY THE MODERATOR NEEDS TO MAKE COMMENTS, AND STUPID NASTY COMMENTS AT BEST?
why cant you people answer the questions? instead of making a mockery of this message board???
TO THE MODERATOR: DO YOU REALLY NEED TO MAKE A COMMENT BACK TO SOMEONE WHO MAKES A STUPID COMMENT?
WHY CANT YOU JUST ACT LIKE A GROWN UP AND IGNORE THE STUPID COMMENTS? YOU ARE ACTING WORSE THAN A CHILD IN THE PLAYGROUND: A LIL BOY PUSHES YOU, YOU JUST CANNOT WALK AWAY??? YOU ONE OF THOSE KIDS WHO NEEDS TO FIGHT/ARGUE????
THIS IS TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR, REALLY...BACK TO THE QUESTION:
When I was a high school student, in a different town, in a different county, community /volunteer service, in regards to high school, was looked upon as "extra cirucculum," and was not a requirement for graduating high school, but a much needed requirement for college acceptance or, at least, community service would look nice on a student's application for college acceptance.
That's the bottom line______________________
Now this post was started by this dear woman who just wants to help her child/ren by understanding the issue of "community service" for this town's high school kids. Why cant you people stay focused on the question, then? If you dont have anything nice or helpful to say, why cant you just look the other way?
I hoped that I've helped you dear; maybe we should start a message board for people who would just like to communicate to others in this town, whether it's just to say hello, or to keep in touch, or to keep up with town's or school's activities...
any problems with what i just wrote?

This is pretty much mandatory in all High Schools now, the main reason is that colleges ask this on the application, this is to help the kids not punish them. |
