Application fee for the LPD

What really should be done to stop this HIGHLY unethical practice of hiring is simple. Every person for the last few years who paid an application fee should demand that the NJ Office of the Attorney General conducts an immediate investigation. This is clearly a scam. There is no way that something as UNETHICAL as this can be legal.

The Mayor and other Commissioners should step in and immediately cancel these appointments.

The best part of all of this is that it is done with such arrogance right under your nose.

Is there a public official in New Jersey who cares about this obvious and obscene action?

Is there anybody out there who can or would like to facilitate this? There is a lot of support within this community to stop this unethical practice. Let's do it!

I am all for this cuase, this whole situation with the new hires actually made me want to make a name on here and post logical arguments, i do not want to take a shot at anybody, but some of the posts in the other forum are absolutley crazy, calling them names, and on the other side of the spectrum, saying that these kids deserve the job. I am very familiar with the hiring process in NJ for police officers and an application fee of 20$ is below the average rate. Most towns anywhere from 50-100$ just to apply. Although, those towns to actually test for the posistion and they must pay the NJ Cheifs Association to administer and grade the tests. Lyndhurst was not wrong by charging only 20$. Many people who aspire to become police officers in NJ are willing to pay 200$ just to have a shot to pay there way through an academy wich costs roughly about 4k and are not even guaranteed a job, so 20$ again is not bad. Something should be done about the way this town hires its employees becuase it is absolutley crazy how they get away with it. Even now during these rough towns NYPD, FDNY, Passaic county sherrifs and many places all over here had to either lay off police or cancel academy classes due to the economic problems in the country. So for 21 yr olds kids with no experience to get hired into a very high paying police dept. now is rediculous.

Sounds like fraud

The quote below is from wisegeek.com and it describes exactly what our Dapper Don has done to everyone who has paid for an application.

“In a broad strokes definition, fraud is a deliberate misrepresentation which causes another person to suffer damages, usually monetary losses. Most people consider the act of lying to be fraudulent, but in a legal sense lying is only one small element of actual fraud. A salesman may lie about his name, eye color, place of birth and family, but as long as he remains truthful about the product he sells, he will not be found guilty of fraud. There must be a deliberate misrepresentation of the product's condition and actual monetary damages must occur.”

If you charge people even $1.00 for the police application while knowing that you already had your names it sounds like it is FRAUD. Forget about the ethics for now.

When an elected official commits fraud in the State of NJ, what are the charges?

Any lawyers out there? Anyone who works for a lawyer or someone with the know-how to do this? The families of the kids who were taken advantage of should consider legal action, or at least contacting the Attorney General's Office. How about a newspaper reporter? We should print copies of these posts and send them to the newspapers. This fraud must be stopped. I think the Attorney General's office should investigate the hiring practices of the Lyndhurst police department on ALL levels to include support staff as well. I'm sure political patronage doesn't stop with those who wear badges, it's clearly a department-wide corruption issue. It's wonderful that this issue is finally out there in the open, now let's just do the right thing.

This is outrageous
It is clear that how these people were hired was unethical.
It is clear that unless you are related to or a close friend of this commissioner you will not get a job.
It is clear that the other commissioners and Mayor have turned a blind eye to this outrageous action.
It is clearly fraudulent that Lyndhurst charges an application fee when they clearly know it is a lie.
It is clear that this commissioner only wanted to be elected to get his picture in the paper every week and to get his people hired.
It is clear that unless the State actually makes an example of this commissioner, this will continue forever.

So who will call the State and demand an investigation?
What about the NAACP?
What about the media?
