Can anyone answer....

Driving down the parkway on a Friday afternoon in the middle of shore traffic. Look to my left and what do i see? Lyndhurst Fire Chief white expedition heading south. Is there any reason why this town vehicle would be going in that direction this weekend? What fire business would there be on Memorial Day weekend. If this person was taking this vehicle on personal business, this should not be tolerated. If he/she is allowed to do so, this practice should he halted immediately. Just doesn't look right in taxpayers eyes and in the economy we are living in, again doesn't look right. Just my 2 cents.

You should have looked to the right and behind you as well. It's a common site to see "town vehicles" at places where you know they have no business being. Did you ever see the town vehicles at shop rite with the entire family in tow? Necessary ???? We should try to cut corners in this dreadful economy and maybe have the town employees should use their own vehicles, gas, insurance etc.

IT'S NOT OFTEN I GO ONTO THIS SITE....BASICALLY BECAUSE OF THE OBVIOUS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF THOSE WHO CHOSE TO SHOW JUST WHAT THEY DON'T HAVE AN OUNCE OF KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. FIRST, LET ME CLEAR UP....FOR ALL WHO RESPONDED, THAT THOSE ON THE LYNDHURST FIRE DEPARTMENT ARE ALL "VOLUNTEERS" NOT ONE OF THOSE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN ARE PAID TO GO RUNNING OUT AT ALL HOURS OF THE DAY AND NIGHT, NOT KNOWING IF THEY WILL RETURN TO THEIR FAMILIES, TO PROTECT YOU!....YES YOU THE COMPLAINING TAX PAYER. GUESS WHAT? THEY PAY TAXES TOO AND WHILE RUNNING OUT TO KEEP YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE, THEY RECEIVE NOTHING IN RETURN OTHER THAN THE SELF-GRATIFICATION OF BEING ABLE TO HELP SOMEONE OR SAVE A LIFE. WHILE YOU'RE ALL RUNNING OUT, THEY'RE THE ONES RUNNING IN. WHILE THINGS ARE TOUGH IN THIS ECONOMY, DID ANYONE EVER STOP TO THINK ABOUT THE COST OF A "PAID" FIRE DEPARTMENT AND WHAT THAT WOULD DO TO YOUR TAXES? THESE PEOPLE DO NOT GET A SALARY OR TOWN BENEFITS. THEY DO IT PURELY BECAUSE.....BECAUSE THEY CARE FOR THEIR COMMUNITY AND THOSE WHO LIVE IN IT....AND THEN YOU GET PEOPLE LIKE THIS WHO HAVE THE NERVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE USE OF VEHICLE! THE NEXT TIME YOU SEE A FIRE DEPARTMENT VEHICLE ON THE PARKWAY....AND YOU MORE THAN LIKELY WILL....ALONG WITH OTHER PUBLIC SAFETY VEHICLES WHO TRAVEL OUT OF TOWN....WHY NOT BEEP AND SAY "THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO"? IT'LL FEEL BETTER THAN COMPLAINING AND MAKE THOSE WHO KEEP YOU SAFE FEEL THE APPRECIATION THEY DESERVE, RATHER THAN YOUR UNJUSTIFIED RESENTMENT. GO L.F.D.....YOU DO A GREAT JOB!!

In that whole post where did you read anything about me bashing the fire department. Obvioulsy you must be a moron. Anyone with common sense would look at that as a waste that our town could do without. I did not see fire apparatus driving on the Parkway, I saw a Ford Expedition. I find it hard to beleive that person was respong to a fire. Many towns in this state have done away with town personnel using town vehicles for personal use as a way of cutting back. Its ok for towns and state to start utilizing furloughs for employees as a way of saving money, but not take away the practice using town vehicles for personal use. Use common sense! To answer answer your question, I was outside! I was on my way to the jersey shore just like the taxpayer funded Lyndhurst Fire Department expedition!

so tell us....are you one of those furloughed state workers. sure does sound that way. a bit bitter. and if a ford expedition was what you saw....it's pretty obvious that a vehicle of that size would not make it to the jersey shore and back to lyndhurst on a tank of gas.....so did it ever occur to you that maybe the person using it pays for the gas that goes in it, if it was being used for personal reasons.....since you know so much. i hardly think that lyndhurst has pumping stations located in towns on the jersey shore for free fill-ups!! get over it. these men and women put their lives on the line with every call. while you say you're not bashing anyone, you are. if using a town vehicle from time to time, whether it be in town or out, is a so called "perk" for putting your life on the line for your community for years, than so be it. when you volunteer, you get nothing else in return....you're not an "employee", which for some reason you cannot grasp. i'll bet that if your family was ever in need of the fire department, you'd be glad that that "expedition" was located outside his/her door to respond quicker to help you. and to answer your comment....obviously you were "outside" if you were on the parkway....the parkway doesn't run through lyndhurst....or weren't you aware of that either? or maybe it does.....and you just didn't know it....and maybe that expedition wasn't out of lyndhurst after all.....now who's the moron!! and as for common sense....you'd better look that one up.....you have none!!

My two cents

I think you are so upset because you are probably, in some way, realted to this individual. I am sure people appreciate the time the fire department volunteers. However, with this economy, a person getting a vehicle to use for business as well as personal use is a HUGE PERK and can almost consider it a blessing. The family would only have to pay for one car payment and one car insurance payment. Not two like most families that work and must have two vehicles. I know that I appreciate my husband having a business vehicle that we are allowed to use for ourselves. It helps a great deal. Let's admit it, he volunteers for the right reason but it is a PERK and a great one at that. Whether he should be taking vacations with it or not is another story. I have realized people on this site love to make others feel bad so don't take it personally and get on with your life.

apparently alot more than the idiot who was apparently paying more attention to the "expedition" on the parkway than he should have been. and he should have taken a picture with his "cell phone". what a riot that would have been when he got pulled over by a trooper....than again, based on his obvious financial concerns, he should be happy to fork over the money for the ticket.

So, by your example, the police should be allowed to use the cruisers on their off days as long as they fill up the tank themselves. The guy's point was valid; it's an official town vehicle and really shouldn't be used for personal reasons. Who knows, the person driving it could've been going to something fire-related down the shore, and then it would be fine.

Is it a little example to gripe about? Of course it is, but it is worth mentioning, especially since every town is hurting for money and who knows what else is going on.

What is a PERK?

The Lyndhurst Fire Department is a group of individuals who volunteer their time to respond to the needs of our citizens in a time of crisis. I want each and every person reading this post to understand that I respect any individual that volunteers to risk their life to save another. The LFD has many perks when one joins the department. The biggest perk is you enter into a whole new family of friends that are there to support you in a time of need. For example the LFD are comprised of business men, electricians, carpenters, mechanics and many other professions. Each and every person is always looking to lend a hand to their fellow firefighter. That in my eyes is a PERK.

To become chief of your department you must be nominated by the other members of your truck/engine. Firefighters have to prove themselves as captains and lieutenants before becoming chief. When you are nominated as a chief the fire department supplies you with a "Chief's truck". The truck is supplied by the town and is meant to be a first responder to the scene of a fire. All the trucks are now equipped with command stations to communicate easily during an emergency.

With all that being said I do not believe the town should allow a chief to take the truck out of town. A couple years ago a fire chief in a neighboring town was in hot water when he decided to use the town's ladder truck to hang a Christmas wreath on his home. How is this any different? If a chief has to go out of town I think he should pass the vehicle down to the captain pending the captain will remain in town. The truck serves no purpose being down the shore. It is NOT A PERK to use the taxpayers money to finance your transportation to the NJ shore. I think the LYNDHURST FIRST TEAM should comment on this matter to ensure it doesn't happen again.

I have to agree with the person on the parkway.

Seems wrong to use the thruck to go down the shore, as far as not getting anything for being in the L.F.D they do get some type of pension .

Not a good example to set .....Not when people face higher taxes.

If you travel use your car if your on call in town then use the truck.
