police salaries

Did anyone see the Record today. Police are getting a 3.9% pay hike. Here's a breakdown of the salaries at each level as of July 1.

starting salary 25,488
post academy 31,784
first anniversary 50,733
thrd anniversary 71,107
fourth anniversary 77,690
fifth anniversary 106,547
detective 112,369
sergeant 116,640
lieutenant 126,734

Doesn't it seem ridiculous that after 5 years on the job they are making over 100,000. It's not like Lyndhurst is a dangerous town where they put their lives at risk everyday. When's the last time any of them were under fire or even fired a weapon?

The median household income in town is around 65,000. Our economy is in shambles with layoffs and salary cuts and freezes, and they get a raise?

How many of you who paid a lot of money to go to college would have expected to make less than a cop in a suburban town. And remember these are just salaries, what about the eventual pension costs? This is crazy!!

There are far more troubling things going on than to worry about paying police officers a decent wage.

What you forget is that while most officers seem to be doing little of nothing other than Picking the pockets of drivers in town, and arresting shoplifters or getting allegedly free Donuts..... They may, at any given time, be thrust into a situation that could take their or someone else's life in a second. While ordinary citizens are running from trouble or danger, these guys may, in order to justify their "outrageous" salary, be running towards it.

I say pay them well...just stop making them Tax Collectors on the roads and Highways of America.

Do you not understand the word "Volunteer"?

In a thousand ways fireman are hero's unlike any other, but the key word here is "Volunteer". The township has a Volunteer Fire Department. Those that are brave enough and dedicated enough Volunteer their service and bravery to help save lives and homes and property. Does the fact they take no salary mean they are less than worthy of one? No.

Volunteers CHOOSE to serve. A noble cause indeed.

I guess I miss your point? Should the Police not get paid because the Firemen don't?

No the original post said nothing of Firemen.

And there was no indication of putting anyone on a pedestal for any actions of any kind.

I would believe the family of the man who wanted to jump from the bridge wouldn't care what these guys are paid after them saving their family member yesterday.
