If you are learning, then you are definately not wasting your time. I think a waste of money would be a better way of putting it, simply because there is so little return on investment.
As to the scholarship, best of luck. Your school may be different, but my grad school only offered scholarships to incoming students as an enticement to get them to attend. When I decided to leave the best they could offer me was ~$1500.
