Good point, DVS et al. I would add that in addition to "know thy own voice", singers need to learn how their voices are perceived by those doing the hiringt. Too many young singers get hung up on being a certain Fach, and they may or may not be realistically marketable for it. More than one singer gets steered into certain types of rep because of their look and/or acting ability, and also because of how they actually sound in a big space as opposed to a studio. There are so many factors that go into marketability! Learn to listen to what people are asking you for in auditions, and what they are offering you, which may or may not coincide with what your teacher says you should be singing (unfortunately). Then you have to figure out who's right, and adjust accordingly.

Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.
